We can grow something better! #Fediverse Punk Month 🖤
"We invest too much of our culture in centralized, for-profit, corporate social media platforms. These platforms enrich billionaires, expand surveillance, and fund the cult of capitalist war, all while trapping us with addictive algorithms that feed us mindless content. It feels necessary to be on these platforms to "stay connected", yet paradoxically they increase our isolation. Their purpose is to extract profit, not to help us connect.
Instead of jumping between online capitalist corporate platforms, we propose a radical alternative that's actually aligned with punk values: the Fediverse, a network for open, autonomous, decentralized, not-for-profit, and DIY social media.

Some people seem to think that there is some sort of right to be free from #criticism online.
You have a right to be free from #harassment, but when you make a public post on the #fediverse or #socialmedia, you are implicitly soliciting public responses.
That you don't like someone's response is not a valid reason to issue a report to the administrators or moderators of that person's instance.
I think I'm on pretty solid #ethical ground, here, but you are of course free to disagree.
Every person joining the fediverse is a digital hero.
You may think it's a small thing. Yes, it's small thing but also a big step to make Internet better and people-first.
Made by the people for the people.
Oh, and also made for cats, dogs, capybaras and other puppies.
So, enjoy, encourage friends to join and let's make it a nice, inclusive and cozy space for everyone.

Blacksky went from a "custom feed that created a sense of shared space" to being the first independent ATProto microblogging community outside of Bluesky.
This is where the focus needs to be in the fediverse as well. Creating safe and welcoming communities that people want to be part of.

@Mastodon is changing course when it comes to how people join the platform. In late 2022, the team decided to send sign-ups directly to their server in order to make onboarding more straightforward. But that didn't align with the promise of decentralization. Here, Community Director @haubles explains the new approach to server recommendation, along with some other ways Mastodon is helping build community.
