Since this https://chaos.social/@Skorpy/115037963703138114 is getting some traction right now, I would like to alert #astrodon folks that I have created this starter pack https://fedidevs.com/s/NjA2/ and that you may be in it: for a *very* loose definition of Germany, it's "Astronomy in Germany".
Accounts that have opted in to discovery features can be added to starter packs without further confirmation. So if you find yourself a part of this and want me to *remove* you, please let me know and I'll try to do this quickly, before it spreads too widely.
If you think you should be on that list, but are not, because of oversight on my part, or because of missing opt-in to account discovery so far, which you would now like to change, also feel free to let me know.
The idea is to have a presentable starter pack ready at the time of #ag2025goerlitz for https://ag2025.astronomische-gesellschaft.de/view_abstract.php?id=39
UPCOMING DEADLINE: The SETI Institute invites outstanding undergraduate interns to apply for the 2025 SETI Forward Award, open from August 4 through September 7, 2025.
Undergraduate student interns who participated in SETI or astrobiology-related research between September 1, 2024, and August 31, 2025, are eligible to apply.
Recipients receive a $1,500 award.

PRESS RELEASE: https://www.seti.org/news/perseverance-rover-uncovers-clues-to-ancient-martian-chemistry/
SETI Institute Senior Research Scientist Janice Bishop and University of Massachusetts Engineering Professor Mario Parente analyzed orbital hyperspectral images from the Compact Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, producing a detailed mineral map at the tens-of-meters scale of the crater documenting deposits of clays and carbonates signaling abundant water on ancient Mars.

On the occasion of the International Annual Meeting of the German Astronomical Society, where a joint effort is happening right now to connect existing #fediverse accounts and to invite more members of the community to participate, here is a starter pack of accounts with a relation to Astronomy in Germany:
Are you all already following each other? Did you just get started and want to ask to be included, too? Would you like to suggest further additions to the starter pack? Are you discovering accounts in the list whose introductions should get boosted around a lot more? Are astronomy aficionados out there finding this list useful?

So cool. If you zoom in on the upper right, you see a little crescent. That's the Martian moon Phobos.
Zoom in again and you'll see a star next to Phobos. That's Earth! That's home.

Featuring prominently on our season's greetings card: the first images of the Sun's south pole 🛰️ ☀️
During its flyby of the Sun at the end of March this year, the Solar Orbiter space probe had its first clear view of our star's poles. Solar Orbiter's trajectory has recently been tilted 17 degrees relative to the Sun's equator, allowing measurements from this unique perspective for the first time. As the new observations impressively show, the magnetic field at the poles is currently in a state of turmoil.
In addition to the images of the sun's south pole taken by the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, the past year has brought us many other highlights: exciting scientific results and important awards. Read more at https://www.mps.mpg.de/en/season-s-greetings-2025

“We’re Too Close to the Debris”: How SpaceX Rockets Put Passenger Planes at Risk
---
The FAA predicted Elon Musk’s Starship would cause “minor or minimal” disruption. Then the rockets exploded twice in three months over busy airspace. Flight data reveals how many planes scrambled to protect passengers and avoid burning debris.

Astronomers sure do conjure up a lot of spooky images when they look out into deep space. A short Halloween thread:

Three Chinese astronauts who have been living on China's Tiangong space station since April 24 were set to return to Earth Wednesday when a piece of suspected “space junk” struck their return capsule — just hours ahead of departure. Looks like they’re going to be there for a while. Read more from @LiveScience:
I really can't stop looking at this photo - We usually think of space as being entirely empty and dark, but our Sun has a lot of dust around it that we can rarely see. This so called Zodiacal light is giving the moon this eerie backlit glow.
And four people really have been there and witnessed this yesterday, absolutely blows my mind!
