The tutorial is grueling, but once you get the hang of it, the game is very addictive. After a while it starts feeling like you're playing elaborate chess with a Cold War flavor rather than ruling a country. It gradually becomes more and more about numbers. The winner is determined by their score, and the highest score can be achieved by some manipulation. If you get a scoring card at the beginning of your turn, just cannibalize all your other cards for influence and pump it all into the region that the card will score. You can easily get 6-10 points in one turn. And getting ~20 ends the game.

I bet it's much more fun to play as a tabletop.

Bangumi
PC / Mac OS / Linux / PS3 / Xbox 360

Soon after CS:GO's release, there was a promotion on Steam that let you play it for free for a weekend - That was my first experience with this game. I jumped in for about half an hour and felt that the game was unremarkable, so I didn't play it again. Though I kept thinking I'd pick it up on sale someday to give it a more thorough inspection. Well, now that CS2 has been released, it's gone, so I figured I'd pirate it. I've heard over the years that the game introduced gambling mechanics for collectible items, as well as player skins, weapon skins and other customization features. I'm not interested in any of that, so I grabbed an older build from 2014. Honestly, my impression this time around is about the same as the first time I played it. Compared to the original CS and its Source port, there are few noticeable changes. In fact, I'd say the appearance of tactical shield in CS 1.6 (and its subsequent removal in CSS) was a bigger change than anything introduced here. So, first of all, there are now different modes of gameplay, most of which I'm not interested in at all. The reason the original Counter-Strike formula was so successful is because it was perfect as it was. New modes add slight alterations, like constant respawns or imposed weapons, which just make it feel more like other multiplayer shooters and less like Counter-Strike. The default mode here is called "Casual" and it plays mostly like the classic Counter-Strike, except without friendly fire and with auto-purchased armor and ammo. This does reduce the busywork, but also makes the game feel easier. Plus, grenades aren't getting auto-purchased, and the process of purchasing gear has become less convenient overall. I still have the muscle memory from the old games of pressing O-2, O-4 and tapping <-> until the clips are full. Here there are no quick shortcuts that would lead directly to the gear menu. Another change I noticed was that hostages are no longer grouped, but rather spread out, and you don't have to lead them out. You put one on your shoulders, which doesn't have any negative impact on you, and carry them to the rescue zone. Somehow one hostage is enough, and the map is won. I don't like this change at all, it makes it almost feel like the Capture The Flag mode in other multiplayer shooters, which again makes it feel less Counter-Strike. In general the game has gotten much easier. The time spent on planting and diffusing bombs has been reduced significantly, and bots have become much less effective. New 'hard' is the old 'easy'. I'm not usually the type to complain about low difficulty, but Counter-Strike has always seemed to me like a game of high stakes and high tension, which can only be achieved with high difficulty. Without that, there's nothing else to it. I tend to view most games like journeys, where progressing through different environments and interacting with people and objects in them is the reason to play the game, regardless of the difficulty. But Counter-Strike is a multiplayer game. Without its high-tension gameplay, it's just a bunch of empty maps with nothing in them. So, the reduction in that aspect definitely leaves the overall experience feeling watered-down. There is apparently some new content, like guns and maps, which is cool, but I never really got to play with the new guns because I've been taught since childhood that B-4-3 or B-4-4 is all you need, unless you want a sniper rifle, which was B-4-6 (?), I think. Other weapons have always felt inferior to me, and were more like something to mess around with than to play seriously. And the game certainly doesn't advertise these new weapons, for I didn't even notice them until I turned the game off and went online to look up what other changes I might've missed. Either way, I don't believe the new content would save a clearly downgraded gameplay. Furthermore, I found the aesthetic here kinda bland. New versions of old maps, such as Dust and Assault, feel lifeless. Overall, there seems to be a massive desaturation of color, compared to the older games, even when it comes to characters. As I understand, this game also uses the Source engine, but Counter-Strike: Source looks much better in my opinion. In conclusion, although the game is fine, if you judge it on its own merit, and, in fact, not that different from its predecessors, it's undoubtedly the worst installment/version of Counter-Strike I've played. The question here is not so much whether the game is good, but rather why would you play it. If you want to see what made Counter-Strike so great, playing 1.5, 1.6, Condition Zero, or Source would give you a more authentic Counter-Strike experience. But, if you'd rather play something more modern and easy, there are tons of better options on the market. Of course, the old games don't have gambling and customization, so, if that's what you're interested in, I can see why you'd prefer this. But at this point it doesn't matter because CS:GO is dead, and now all you can play is CS2, which AFAIK also contains all the gambling and customization features.

其它标题: Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror 2002年4月24日

24岁的Laurent“Shag”Delayen是Kamehan Studios——开发Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror的年轻小组的负责人。“Tactical Ops是在我学习计算机工程的时候开发的,”Delayen说,“最初它只是学习Unreal引擎的一个练习,但是受到成功的鼓励,这个游戏变成了一个许多开发人员参与的完整Mod,后来又发展成一个零售游戏。”Delayen说他对这个Mod最喜爱的方面是“快节奏和街机的风格,而且依我看来,它也非常直观。”

2025年9月4日 评论 Another nostalgia trip for me - Had this on a CD as a kid. I've been meaning to revisit it for years now. In fact, it was one of the first games I tried to install when I first switched to Linux, as it has a native Linux version. Needless to say, as with most old Linux games, it didn't work. Tried it again today and got segmentation fault crashes, plus there's now issues with PipeWire as the game is looking for Pulse Audio. Anyway, it's such a mess, I just decided not to bother and did the Windows version instead, which ran flawlessly out of the box with OpenGL, and I put ReShade on top for easy AA-solutions (I find FAAA works best with older games). This is essentially a Counter-Strike clone made on the Unreal engine. It's got that asymmetric objective-based gameplay, like save the hostages, plant a bomb, etc etc. You purchase weapons, armor, grenades, in fact even the weapons are mostly the same ones you get in CS. The only major difference I noticed is that there's a more complicated damage model, akin to Deus Ex, where different parts of your body can get different damage, and you can buy armor for head, torso, and legs separately. However, despite all the similarities, it still feels like a mod for Unreal Tournament. The thing that makes Counter-Strike work is the complex physics/ballistics system. Which this game just does not have. On normal difficulty headshotting a bot with a desert eagle doesn't kill them. In general player/bot models feel very stiff when you shoot them, it's like it doesn't matter where you hit them. Your reticle is static as well, in fact it's the default Unreal/UT reticle, which means there's no dynamic accuracy system either. It really feels like you're just playing Unreal Tournament with Counter-Strike weapons and models. Still, it kinda works for what it is. I imagine in multiplayer it's a lot of fun, but the bots are really stupid. There's no single-player campaign either, but there is a fan-made one, and it's just terrible, don't bother. One thing it helped me realize though is that there is a limit on how far you can shoot. There were moments where I could get a clear shot, but it just wasn't registering. And that campaign can really make you feel the stiffness of the physics. Like there are rooms full of enemies, and I was able to get them into a tight corridor, which in Counter-Strike would give me a winning chance if I hit headshots, but here it wasn't possible even on easy because the bots have tanky heads. Anyway, I'd recommend avoiding this game, unless you have a bunch of friends with whom you'd wanna fuck around in the multiplayer. The maps are really good and beautiful. It's also worth just kinda jumping in and exploring them with a noclip cheat. If you're into that old Unreal aesthetic, this is a goldmine for pretty visuals.

I like the concept, but there's a lot of problems here - It's like a mix of management, RPG and life sim. Closest I can think of is Crusader Kings, but more locally-focused. First of all, regardless of your character's initial stats, you're gonna spend like the first hour trading. Because doing jobs is not profitable enough. You'll be barely scraping by if you do jobs. And considering the fact how each of them takes 1 stamina, same as trading, but trading yields way more money, there's no reason to do jobs, at least early on. I don't know if there is a reason in the long term. I suppose once you become affluent, your skills (which get improved when you do jobs) might come in handy, but I played the game for 3 hours, and didn't really need my skills almost at all. So you kinda almost have to trade at the start, and the trading here is executed really poorly. They could've given us an overview of all merchants and their prices, which would've made the whole process easier. There's also an ability to automate certain tasks, but you can't automate trading. No, instead you have to click on every single seller and every single buyer individually to see the prices. I mean, you don't have to buy for the lowest price and sell for the highest, but why wouldn't you? When the opportunity to maximize your efficiency is right there, why wouldn't you? The difference between trading at max. efficiency and not trading (relying on jobs) can be up to several thousand gold each month. The game's tutorial kinda misleads you too by teaching you to do things that are not the best strategically. What you wanna do at the start is not to buy farms, but to just trade. Get married, get as many concubines and retainers as you can and just trade. Then buy stores and houses to rent out. However, as I figured that out and started to approach a decent monthly income where I'd stop having to trade (a few thousand simply wouldn't be worth it anymore), suddenly I started losing something like 25+k a month, instantly sending into a debt, and within two months my characters started dying out. And I had no idea what caused that. The game has a ledger, but it strangely only reports income and purchases, not all expenses apparently. So that's where I had to give up. I'll also say that the interface in general is far from convenient. You can't filter jobs per type, so you have to just monitor pop-ups the entire time. Same with trading, you have to monitor actual merchants. And it's not made easier by the fact that when you zoom out, all icons and text also zoom out, so you're looking at tiny dots on the map, and it's putting an incredible strain on your eyes. There is a potential here, but it's ruined by the execution.

Essentially the same game as Democracy 3 - As many have pointed out, it's very biased. You can't, for example, build a Socialist utopia, not one with a functioning economy. Unemployment is mostly tied to GDP, which is mostly tied taxation. If you want your people to have jobs, let corporations go wild, which is antithetical to how it works in real life. Even if we pretend that the USSR was a truly Socialist country, its planned economy actually worked at a certain point, and its collapse wasn't proof of its inadequacy, but was rather linked to a series of other issues. But building something like a modern-day Scandinavian nation? Forget about it. Still, it's pretty fun for about 8 hours, after which point you reach the point where you've done all you could and are now simply maintaining what you have. That's when it becomes really boring.

Virtua Racing Deluxe is an enhanced port of Virtua Racing, released as a launch title for the Sega 32X in North America and Europe in late 1994.

Much of its team was comprised of developers who had produced the port of Virtua Racing to the Sega Mega Drive, however the visuals in Virtua Racing Deluxe are far more accurate and the some music was rearranged. Naofumi Hataya also composed several new tracks for the game, in some cases replacing original themes.

2025年5月8日 评论 review - I think I should give Daytona USA another try. I don't remember exactly how it mechanically differs from Virtua Racing, but I suspect not very much. Yet I quite enjoyed the latter. In this version you get 3 car types, and they all handle very differently and there's a surprising amount of depth to it. It's a very skill-driven game, and I can see someone getting good enough to actually win these races, but it wouldn't be me. One thing it definitely does better than Daytona is the music. And I like how environments actually feel like real places. For a game from 1994 it has surprisingly few compromises compared to modern racers. Regarding 32X, it keeps impressing me with its technical capabilities and smooth performance (on an emulator). This game has more camera modes than most proper 3D racers, with one of them being a cabin view, and one zooming out so far that you can see the entire width of the 3D map. It's a good thing several classic Sega arcade games were ported to 32X, as it seems to be the easiest way to play them nowadays. Still, I have the same issues with this game that I have with most arcade games: it's too short and too difficult. Also, like any old racing game, it has horrendous collision physics, but that's to be expected. While it is fun to spend an hour or two here, by today's standards there's little to really keep you in the game beyond educational purposes (studying the history of the medium).

This year it was the CD companion to the January 2003 issue of GameLand magazine . Honestly, I didn't even remember that I had gotten this game from there. This was also where I got the Panzer Dragoon demo and the Harry Potter: Chamber of Secrets demo, as well as another fighting game that I will review later. Back then having games that you can play in hotseat was a big deal for me and my friends/cousins. Every one of them was treasured. This was no exception. A side-scrolling recreation of Quake 3. It was not even fair because one player was using the mouse and the other player had to aim with the keyboard, but whenever you managed to score frags with keyboard-aiming, you felt godlike. Nowadays, all this game does is remind me I have no-one to play it with. Tried my luck with the multiplayer, and the list of servers is completely empty. Oh well...

The game can be played with friendly matches or a full world cup. There are 4 stadiums and matches have fast gameplay: there are no injuries, shooting goes very quickly, and tackling is easy. The ball can be passed in three ways: short, long and ahead of a player. If a player doesn't have the ball, he can make a tackle or a serious foul. Strategically the team's formation can be altered and players can be substituted. The game is in full 3D and matches are conducted in varying weather conditions and different times of day. This was probably my first football game ever. - This was probably my first football game ever. I think I might've seen one Sega Genesis football game before this, but I never really played that one. It's still fun to play, even though it lacks a lot of features I've gotten used to over the years. For example, in most football games you can just hold down a button, and your guy will automatically run towards the ball and try to grab it. Here, you have to manually run up to the enemy players and press a grab button, which, if you don't time it right, will fail. In addition, I'm used to a map like in PES games, but here all you get is some arrows under your selected player, showing the nearby players. The biggest downside, I'd say, is that the controls are not remappable. And by default the same button is used for grabbing the ball and trying to score a goal. So you will often be frantically trying to grab the ball from the enemy, only to immediately kick it far away by accident. In terms of game modes and customization, it's really bare bones as well. Practially all you can do is either play a match (where you do get stadium, time and weather settings) or play a tournament. There is only one song, which plays in the menu, and it's alright. The sounds in general are pretty okay. I kinda liked the graphics too, including the artstyle, Overall, pretty decent, but there's literally no reason to favor it over PES or FIFA.
