2024年3月23日 评论 Full disclosure: couldn't play through the game because of constant crashes - Will probably give it another try sometime in the future. Still, I felt justified in rating it based on my limited experience. I quickly realized I didn't like the story and began skipping the cutscenes, so I figured I might as well download a save file and jump through most of the missions to avoid the crashes. Shortly before the game's release I played the demo of it and was so impressed that I couldn't wait for the full game to come out. But I remember when I finally gave it a try, the early sections of the game got me so bored that I just kinda moved onto other games. And it is true that the beginning of the game is kinda slow. You start off with a quick jetpack tutorial and a dogfight, which is pretty fun, but then it kinda drags you into this very slow and mediocre cover-based shooter with a lot of cutscenes, dialogues and walking sections. Once they give you the jetpack again, there's strangely another dogfight tutorial that is exactly the same. But you also get to do some cover-based shooting with the jetpack, and I gotta say, this is kinda where the game's potential lies, and what impressed me so much with the demo. Imagine a cover-based shooter where you can fly over enemies and ambush them from behind or attack from the air. In addition there is vertical cover that totally shifts the plane of combat. The possibilities here were insane: fully three-dimensional combat and fully three-dimensional exploration of open levels. That's what it could've been. In reality though, I feel like the systems don't really interact with each other, and often undermine each other. The levels are pretty linear and often wouldn't let you switch between hovering and boosting because you'd immediately start hitting walls and lose control. The floors and ceilings are also quite noticeable. In more open locations you'd see mountains and wanna climb on top of them, but the game just wouldn't let you. But when the game does give you some open-space combat arenas, you quickly realize that you kinda have to get close to your enemies in order to deal any decent damage, and once you do get close, you kinda have to take cover because you're extremely fragile. Not to mention there are very few locations that give you vertical cover. In fact, I feel like this game is too short and spends way too much time locking you in linear sections and depriving you of the jetpack, the main attraction of the game. Without it, this is just a poor man's Gears of War. But the dogfights are really the star of the show here. It's very fun to do maneuvers and outsmart enemies. On top of that, the coolest feature is how you can hijack an enemy aircraft and fully utilize it throughout the battle. Like it's not just a gimmick, they don't break in 5 seconds or limit your movement, they're a decent combat option. Honestly, instead of crafting a story-driven campaign, they should've just given us procedurally-generated open levels with both ground and air combat happening simultaneously like in Battlefront and Battlefield games, except give us better weapons, higher accuracy, more melee options and maybe some special powers to make us feel like a superhero. Let us dive from the air to the ground with an AOE attack or pluck enemies from the ground like an eagle. Let us kamikaze-attack airships or use a hook to zip towards them. Now that would've been a really fun game. But instead this kinda makes you feel like a dog on a leash in a park. There seems to be so much fun to be had here, but they just don't let you do any of it.

2024年7月1日 评论 Another childhood favorite of mine that didn't age quite well - I suppose you could call games like this proto-clickers. The main difference from clickers being that there's some actual gameplay here, not just an endless chain of upgrades. You buy some fish, feed them and they shit money. Then you buy the fish that eat those fish and shit diamonds, and so on. Every level some new mechanic or tool gets introduced to keep things fresh. You have to fight off aliens that eat your fish, you get a battling fish that attacks aliens, etc. Before long, things get so chaotic that you end up clicking all over the screen rapidly, constantly buying new fish, feeding the existing ones and catching their droppings. You do get a snail that helps you with the latter, but, I mean, it's a snail, what do you expect from it? I now kinda understand why people get aquariums. There is some sick pleasure in being in charge of lives of stupid animals and protecting them from aliens. But it is also very tiring. I can't play this game for longer than 20 minutes at a time. The coolest feature here is that they let you create your own screensaver. Unfortunately, I haven't used screensavers since like 2004, and am now running this on Linux, so this feature just doesn't work here. I wonder if it does on Windows 11. I think a game like this was much more valuable in the pre-internet era (which for me was pre-2007) because, for all you knew, it was one of a kind. But after you've played two or three of these, you start seeing the seams.

2025年10月19日 评论 I loved the demo of this as a kid - Mainly it's the Wallace-&-Gromit-style graphics (which have aged really well) and a very simple and intuitive, yet cerebral enough gameplay that can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. Much more so I loved the sequel which I remember choosing over some other proper 3D action game at the store. What was I thinking, right? But no, I actually ended up spending many fond hours with that game. In retrospect I definitely made the right choice. But there's a reason I never really had the urge to go back to the first game. I think it's the monotonous visuals. Every level is taking place in the same house with slight alterations. The sequel had much more variety. Honestly though, it's still a fun game, but I can't enjoy it anymore. Looking at it as an adult, the protagonist seems like an annoying asshole. And at first the fact that this was (in the game's setting) a cheery reality show about giving your neighbor a heart attack was mildly amusing to me. But then I got this one level where this lonely middle-aged man, in preparation for a visit from his mom, is working on a statue of hers among other things. And we have to destroy the statue. And see, this gameplay is kinda based around memorizing the order of the neighbor's activities, so he can't break the order. He keeps coming back to that statue and just ... crying. And I just wanna kms, wtf have I done...

2025年12月3日 评论 Feels like a game designed by an insane person in both the good and the bad way - Upon launching, it immediately throws you in the career mode without letting you configure anything first. Pressing Esc, Backspace, Tab or any other conceivable "menu button" didn't yield anything. I spent 15 minutes playing the game before I was able to quit to menu. Only much later I realized that that the menu button is H for whatever insane reason. So you have a choice of several insane-looking characters, but in the story mode it's like "select a character" and there's only guy there, lol. The story mode is by far the most entertaining mode here. I mean, first of all, the style of this game is incredible. I'm sure it's probably influenced by some specific racing anime, but the only frame of reference for me is the Running Man short in the Neo Tokyo anthology. Though my memories of it are very vague, so I might be way off. Only direct reference I caught was that every time you cross the finish line, your car does that Akira slide . But the game crafts this really atmospheric and cozy escapist world with immaculate aesthetics and perfect soundtrack, which comes to shine in the story mode, as there are tidbits of vivid lore before every race that spark your imagination and context provided about the somewhat abstract locations you race on. The premise is that you're racing against AI opponents, each of which is a colorful character with their own quirks, and there are seemingly some cool plot twists. The writing here is hilarious and unhinged, which is great in my book. The way the characters talk to each other has that chaotic randomness of Daniil Kharms. However, I got to chapter 5 out of 12 and got stuck. There are several difficulty levels, and they generally function exactly how you'd expect them, but here on chapter 5 the game suddenly became insanely difficult. The track is a super tiny circle, so it's an almost constant drift. There are boost panels and slowdown panels on the track, so you have to really mind where you're driving, and it becomes this balancing act because it's hard not to hit the walls when you speed up mid-turn. I played the track several times and could not score higher than the 3rd place. It's simply impossible even you drive near-perfectly. Like you can literally never hit the walls and hit every boost panel, and the entire time you're seeing your opponent right in front of you, almost like a mirror. But you can't always be perfect. As that famous line from the Wire: "See, the thing is, you only got to fuck up once. Be a little slow, be a little late, just once. And how you ain't gonna never be slow? Never be late? You can't plan through no shit like this, man. It's life." Sometimes it's your fault, but other times just the randomness of AI and the subpar collision physics. I don't understand how they work. When you crash into another car, it's always a gable as to who gets derailed. This game got me really missing Black Box's Need for Speed games. I've tried the other modes too. There's a career mode and a championship mode, both of which made me wonder why they're separate from the story mode. Like, you could have a championship that's a career with a story... but whatever. The career mode lets you buy and upgrade cars, and championship is just championship... just compete for points or something? Then there's arcade mode, which works like Outrun, with checkpoints that reset your timer. And finally there's Time Attack, which I haven't tried. Honestly, just replaying that one chapter in the story several times got me all burnt out. But I do want to come back to this game later. Hopefully, by the time I do, they will have rolled out some patches.

2025年12月4日 评论 From the title you'd assume this is another boomer shooter, but it's actually more of a System Shock clone - Personally, I've never played System Shock 2, so I don't know how much this lifts from it, and I didn't like System Shock 1, but this I kinda dig. It's intuitive enough to keep you wanting to explore its world. There's some pretty decent writing, and the basic combat functions competently, though not great. But that's okay, because exploration is what this is game is all about. Compared to System Shock 1, the interface and controls are way simpler and easier to interact with, so they don't get in the way of the gameplay. You can dual-wield, which usually means holding a flashlight in one hand, and easily switch between weapons with a mouse wheel, though I would've preferred binding weapons to digit keys. Weirdly, to reload, you have to hold down R and then click the mouse button corresponding to the hand you're holding the weapon in. I guess that's to give you more control over what you want to reload, but it made me spend like 30 minutes thinking you can't reload a gun until the clip is near-empty. There isn't really much to say about the core gameplay: you're literally just exploring, key-hunting, picking up notes and shooting enemies. But man, this game needs A LOT of polish. So I'm gonna just mention a few things that I think need improvement: The game looks like it's from 1996, but runs like the latest Call of Duty. Very optimization, and almost no graphics settings. All you can do is turn off a couple of effects. But not all effects. There's still some very modern-looking lighting. That looks disgusting to me. I hate when retro graphics are mixed with modern effects. To quote a youtuber I used to watch as a teen, when he was talking about fan builds of Quake 2 with "upgraded" graphics, "it's like taking an old lady and dressing her up like a hooker." I understand that it's a matter of taste, but why force these effects on the player? Just give us the option to turn them off. This game really really needs a map. I mean, from what I've played the level design seemed intuitive enough that I was able to figure out where to go, but I foresee getting lost at some point in a game like this. Also give me the ability to save wherever I want. I get that this might be against the game's vision or some shit, but having no ability to save makes me less experimental and increases the risk of me dropping the game at some point, if I run into a situation where I die a couple of times and have to replay the same like 15-minute portion of the game, because it only lets you save at specific spots. I mean, fans of Resident Evil might like this, but not me. Make the player automatically pick-up ammunition. It's really annoying when you wanna loot a corpse and they have an item you want and a gun that you already have, so you can't just click "retreieve all items" because then you'll quickly fill your inventory with repeated guns. So what you have to do instead is right-click on the gun and select "pick up ammunition", forcing you to basically pick up the other items manually. It's just a chore. Voice-acting. I found kinda hilarious that the local Cortana lookalike speaks with this noticeable vocal fry. It sounds like the dev got his sister to voice her. And there's one of type of enemy that makes this super loud grunt that you can't tell where it's coming from. Like, the enemy might be in front of you, but the sound almost sounds like it comes from behind. I'd love to return to this game in the future. I hope these things get patched, and then I'll probably raise the rating too. It's just a few things holding it back from realizing its potential.

2025年12月5日 评论 There is a surprising amount of depth in this simple arcade flight sim - When I was a kid, I once played some shareware game, the name of which I sadly can't remember. All I can say for certain is that it had "sail" in its name. I remember that clearly because that was the first time I encountered that word and wondered about its similarity to the word "sale" and its possible meaning. All I can remember about the game is that it was a sailing simulator (duh). But the imagery of it was very simple, yet very evocative. There were basically three colors: the yellow sand of the shore, the white hull of the boat, and the endless blue expanse. When I looked at screenshots of Aviassembly, it reminded me of that game. But of course, being a rational adult man, I did not place any expectations on this game. All I wanted from it was a nice aesthetic and simple gameplay. But the game I expected the least from, ended up impressing me the most out of the 2025 releases I've played so far. There is a surprising amount of depth in this simple arcade flight sim. What a weird coincidence that I played this literally after Easy Delivery Co. cause the games have a lot in common. This is also a delivery game actually. Except there's so much more to it. You design your plane yourself in a Spore-like constructor, and the changes you make actually affect the gameplay. For example, after having my rear wheel often break upon landings, I decided to just put another set of front wheels on the back, and then extended the hull to have more room for carrying items, and put another set of front wheels in the middle. Now landing the plane became super easy, but basically I can't lift off unless I use some kind of a ramp, which adds more risk to it, but it also makes the lift-off so much more rewarding when you pull it off. Like one time I actually dipped into the sea and made it out, and that made me involuntarily smile and scream "YES!" and raise my hands in the air, lol. This game is just a blast. And it has such a addictive gameplay loop: you deliver items, earn money and scraps, which allows you to unlock new items and improve your plane, which in turn makes you wanna try out the new improvements, so you go back to flying and delivering items again. And see, contrary to Easy Delivery Co., this game does not sacrifice its mechanical depth in favor of aesthetics, but it's still got the damn aesthetics though. It looks gorgeous, has a relaxing soundtrack and is really well optimized. The only reason I didn't rate it higher is that I expect to get tired of it pretty soon. But maybe not, so I might still increase the rating in the future. Definitely will be playing more of this.

2025年12月8日 评论 The Wandering Village seemed like an exciting concept, and at first it was very enjoyable to play - I love the concept of a city builder, but in practice I'm not a huge fan of them. They all start rather easy and comfy, but after a while turn into a never-ending list of problems you need to fix. The Wandering Village seemed like an exciting concept, and at first it was very enjoyable to play. The idea that your civilization is built on the back of a giant creature implies a kind of symbiosis. Made me think of Star Wars with its theme of concentric worlds and interdependence of people, midi-chlorians and larger cosmic bodies. My mind began teeming with possibilities of a kind of city-builder mixed with a tamagotchi and exploration of a fantasy world. But tbh, after 2.5 hours of it my mind was just overcome with stress trying to solve a never-ending list problems. That classic city-builder gameplay just sucked all the fun out of the idea. And, while the game does have exploration and life simulation elements, they're rather minor and completely overshadowed with the city-building gameplay. That being said, I'm still curious to explore the game more. I know there's a sandbox mode where you can adjust the difficulty and everything. I'll try that next time, perhaps I'll find it more enjoyable.

2025年12月13日 评论 This has the potential of being amazing - It has that addictive gameplay loop like most games of its kind, where you're releasing one movie while producing a second one and writing a third one, so you're constantly on the verge of finishing another movie or putting a new movie into production. And you're constantly unlocking new technologies, story elements and buildings, and your movies just keep getting better and earning more money, so you never wanna stop. I jumped into this game and got lost in it for 6 hours. I'm actually going to delete it for now because of how damn addictive it is. But man, as an aspiring filmmaker myself, I've always wanted a good moviemaking game. There was The Movies by Peter Molyneux, which wasn't a great strategy, but you could actually create movies in it. It took you like 2 hours to create a 2-minute movie, and it was ridiculous, but as a kid I loved it. Hollywood Animal is much more focused on its strategy and RPG elements, but still lets you flex some creativity. It's kinda like Game Dev Tycoon, except here the process is not rigged. Your decisions and stats actually matter. And I just love the aesthetic, the atmosphere, the jazz music playing in the background, and the game taking you through actual cinema history of the 1930s, with memorable characters and events. It has a bit of Crusader Kings in it, with you having to manage characters that have their own traits and stats. As of now though, the game is not finished. There are bugs, and missing features, and I'd say some mechanics are not well-explained or the interface is not always the most intuitive. But really this has the potential of being amazing. I'll come back to this when it's finished and when I have more free time to be wasting 6 hours a day playing video games.

2025年4月25日 评论 Something in between Civilization and Crusader Kings - I like how each ruler’s personality, ambitions and relationships dictate the way the empire develops. It really adds a touch of humanity to everything and makes decisions carry weight. Also, the fact that within your state you have different dynasties that control different cities, adding a bit more depth to internal politics and structure, and making cities feel more like living entities instead of everything being controlled by you personally. The music and atmospheric sound effects are also great, much better than those in Paradox games, and closer to Civilization in quality. One thing I don’t understand is why cities can only be settled in specified locations. The decision seems bizarre to me and single-handedly disqualifies this game from being a Civ competitor in my eyes. Still, I did have a lot of fun playing it and will probably return to it someday.
