MAJOR ANNOUCEMENT!!!
I along with @kishy have started Indian Permacomputing Collective called Nodus Tollens, and we are gonna kick things off by presenting "Permacomputing: A Humane Computing Paradigm" talk in the upcomping minidebconf, kanpur² . Please go REGISTER if can visit there.
So I asked @j3s this also want you ask you all the folks here who are more versed into permacomputing than me:
- "How should I introduce `permacomputing` to someone who is fully into current freedom destroying technologies?"
The talk will be around 15 min + 5 min for q&a.
So please give your inputs, how can I condense this very vast topic, I know this will be very hard but still I would want to make atleast someone curious about this via my talk.

Over next 1-2 weeks,I'd appreciate an extended thread re: #FrameworkLaptop, #mntreform, & #FOSS.
TL;DR on my idiosyncratic needs:
* minimize binary firmware blobs¹
* Having 2 disks in RAID-1²
* Runs stock Official #Debian stable³
* Understanding best current replacement keyboard options⁴
Is @frameworkcomputer or @mntmn better for me?
As I **hate** “please boost” requests, I don't so-ask, *but* I'd be glad if ∃ active engagement on this.
The Debian project is engaging in a debate and vote on whether large language model (LLM) tools may be used in the development of Debian, its distribution-specific code, and the project’s website. The general resolution is currently being discussed leading into a vote on the subject.

So, according to some people #Debian is now a "slop operating system".
Because they *checks notes* accepted "responsible use of generative AI".
My personal stance on the matter:
- AI good or bad is a different discussion
- like in many scenarios, "it's not that simple" applies here as well
- AI code is already present in every Linux distribution via the kernel
- AI code is already present in Linux software, regardless of the distro
- Debian didn't open a previously closed door, and this door doesn't lead to hell either
- most software available in Debian, and any other Linux distro, is written by independent coders - Debian simply packages it
- if these coders use AI to produce their code, blaming Debian is a moot point
- Debian has a 30 year standing reputation of providing a quality product and this will not change
- all contributions submitted to Debian must qualify the high standard of quality, maintainability etc expected - this means: no slop
- if you're strongly opposed to coders using AI tools (which is in your rights), blaming Debian for that is probably the wrong tree to bark under.
Think hard before taking actions, and even harder before posting about it online.
Disclaimer: I am a Debian user, not otherwise linked to the Debian project.
This is my personal opinion.
FLOSS #MaintainerLife public service advisory:
If you're filing a potential bug upstream in #GNOME, particularly on rapidly-improving apps like GNOME Calendar, please test the latest version, unmodified by third-parties. #Flatpak helps.
Don't come at me with a 4-years-old version cowboy-patched against our will by #Linux distros like Mint; I will send you downstream, like this: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-calendar/-/issues/1526#note_2640160

I am exceptionally disappointed in the centrist decision taken by #Debian on LLM usage. I'll be halting any work I do that might benefit Debian, including reporting bugs.
I have used Debian since at least 2000, but I will be actively working to find another "default" #Linux distribution.
I've come to the conclusion that, while I am still using #Windows 11 out of inertia, it's time to contemplate an exit plan towards #Linux . The switch won't be any time soon (I have too much other stuff on my plate for the foreseeable future), but I do want to avoid paying further license fees to #Microsoft .
Major areas of concern:
- My #Steam library. I am by no means a heavy gamer, but I want to check if the major games I enjoy are known to work on Linux.
- Migrating away from #GoogleDrive towards #NextCloud is going to be a major chore, but it's something I can start in advance.
- I am a very heavy user of Notepad++ for my #TeXLaTeX typesetting, so I need a replacement whose user experience comes close (and no, neither vim nor emacs count).
As for what distribution to choose... I dunno. Lots of people at my place of work use #Debian , so maybe that would be a good idea?

@simontatham It's been a looong time since I used #putty (I ran it in a #Wine "bottle", these came from #flatpak, I'm using Debian 13 #KDE). Thanks for all your efforts!
To my mind, 98% of the time, people would use putty to log into a #linux box/VPS, like say a #RaspberryPi (Raspberry Pi OS, is #Debian Trixie 13-based). This would be a sensible default assumption, **demographically**.
It took a good 2 hours of struggling, just to get 256 colors to work in Putty! (#Python's textualize library seriously expects 256, or *it can crash* when the Theme is changed). Please let the defaults be sane, so there's no struggle for 256 colors! Please alleviate my nerd rage - I beseech you!
1) Sane TERM env var:
Connection -> Data -> Terminal details -> Terminal-type string -> "putty-256color"
2) Sane default font:
Window -> Appearance -> Font settings -> "Change" button -> adwaita mono 12
3) Sane bolding of text:
Window -> Colors -> General options for color usage -> Indicate bolded text by changing: The font
4) Sane (Linux-terminal-style) Ctrl + Shift + {C,V} (for copy and paste):
Window -> Selection -> Assign copy/paste actions to clipboard -> Ctrl + Shift + (C,V}: System Clipboard
Generative AI is a machine which immediately eats any human creativity we might dare come up with, so that it can be sold back to us by tech oligarchs.
There is no "responsible" use of this. It is an enclosure of knowledge and a massive power grab. One of the most disgusting uses of technology outside of warfare (but it's used there too!). If you feel like it's helping you write code or whatever... in the end, it really isn't. It's helping the tech oligarchs monopolize OSS. 1/3
ICYMI: some dork used #Claude #LLM to 'fix' an issue in #rsync and broke it (v3.4.3).
#GenAI is shit and shld not be used for code that needs to work, even if you have the morals of a billionaire skunk.
Lots of critical tasks, such as backup 🤦♂️ will be broken as people update their #Debian #Linux thanks to this stupid obsession and psychosis.
How much will that cost? On top of all the costs inflicted on people who never touch the stuff and don't want to run anything built with it, like me.
