🥳 Announcing Splinter, your #fediverse tool for creating #Mastodon threads.

Splinter is a simple, self-explanatory app. It's a fun, non-profit, open-source side project.

I use Splinter all the time myself now; There must be others who need it. Please share to help them find it!

https://splinter.hastily.cc/ (1/2)

My profile's bio may need to be tweaked soon. I'm thinking of coming out of filmmaking retirement to make promotional videos for the #Fediverse.

I just rewatched a video I made years ago to criticize Big Tech and oh my goodness it's so tame when you consider the horrors we are facing today: https://vimeo.com/292544650

Images from Monday's spectacle (feat.

#Introduction #Fediverse #Fediverso

What shall we name the Lemmy/PieFed equivalent to a "Multireddit"?

We’re working on a multireddit feature which will let people join or leave large groups of related Communities with a single click, and see all the posts from those communities in a single list. These groups will be crowd-sourced, so anyone can create or share collections of Communities around their interests. Basically the same as https://piefed.social/topics except crowd-sourced (and federated?).

We’re stuck on what to call this feature, though, and your creativity could really help us out! Here are some ideas we’ve been tossing around:

Bundles
Community Packs
PieSlices
Stacks
QuickJoin Packs
Collections (kbin called it this)
Topics (we call them this now but they're all maintained by the instance admin)

Which of these do you like best? Do you have any suggestions of your own? We're aiming for something that’s easy to understand, catchy, and fits the PieFed ethos. I'll copy those suggestions into individual comments on this post so people can upvote what resonates with them.

The problem I have with ideas like "Collections" or "Topics" is those concepts have no relation to "Communities" which increases the learning new users need to do while getting comfortable. Something more intuitive like "Towns" is more obviously a larger or group of "Communities", for example.

Please throw your ideas into the comments below and vote on what you see!

As someone who is totally blind, the Fediverse is the only place where I have ever been able to follow people such as photographers, artists, or even those who post pictures of their cats or the food they ate. The reason is that most of them use alt text. They take the time to describe the images that my screen reader can't recognise. Some write the descriptions themselves, and others use tools such as altbot. Some worry that their descriptions aren't good enough, especially when they are new at this. Let me assure you, not only are they good enough, they are extremely appreciated! If the rest of the world thought as you did, it would be a much better place. Don't hesitate to ask if you're unsure of something, but never think that we don't notice your effort.

#appreciation #accessibility #altbot #alttext #blind #blindness #fediverse #gratitude #images #inclusivity #peoplewhocare #pictures #technology

Exciting update on #BotKit: we've introduced a new Repository abstraction layer that provides cleaner data access. While previously data operations went directly through KvStore, they now go through Repository—improving separation of concerns and making the codebase more maintainable. Automattic and others back Openvibe, an app that's unifying the open social web

Openvibe’s clever app that integrates multiple open social networks, including Bluesky, Mastodon, Nostr, and Threads, just got a boost toward its future development. The company on Tuesday announced that it has received outside investment of $800,000 in a round led by Czech Founders VC, which includes backing from WordPress.com and Tumblr parent company, Automattic, as well as Tensor Ventures.

Czech Founders VC and former CTO of Mews Jan Široký also invested separately from his firm.

Launched in 2024, Openvibe initially supported three of the more prominent open social networks, all of which operate using different protocols: Mastodon uses ActivityPub, Bluesky runs on AT Protocol, and Nostr powers a number of third-party apps. Openvibe later added support for Instagram Threads, as that app became further integrated with ActivityPub and opened itself up to the developer community.

As CEO Matej Svancer explained at the time, the idea behind his app was to offer users a more friendly and “easy-to-use gateway” to the open social web. Because of the different protocols these networks utilize, it can be difficult for newcomers who end up having to switch apps or limit their engagement to just their preferred platform.

But Openvibe doesn’t just let people stay connected with friends across all these services in a combined timeline, it also allows cross-posting to multiple networks at once.

With the added capital, Svancer plans to accelerate product development, expand Openvibe’s user base, work on integrations with other social platforms, refine the user interface, and more.
