Walking a dirt and gravel footpath along the shore of a pond. The path and adjacent shoreline make a 90 degree turn right ahead, then follow a narrow peninsula with a forest of leafless trees waiting for spring. Already rather low in the sky, the sun is shining directly towards us through the branches. To our right we can see a small corner of a small cove on the lake, most of the lake is out of frame. A small patch of thin ice sits near the far shore. The rest of the bay is open water, rippled by gusty breezes. Those ripples are distorting the silhouetted reflections of the trees into a psychedelic pattern of wavy loops.

Trees, mountains, and the roads and trails that make getting to them so much easier, as this image from Two Medicine in Glacier National Park shows. The colors of the exposed geology are greys, greens, reds, and pinks, stretching from left to right in the upper half of the view. A deep blue sky with just a few white clouds appears above the mountains, with early fall colors evident in the vegetation below. The majority of the foreground is green trees with light trunks bisected by a silver-grey roadway that is partly in shadow. Thanks to the National Park Service and the Glacier National Park Conservancy for providing these beautiful views!

“Old Tree and Cotswalds Woods” — Old tree in a clearing in a Cotswolds forest.

I have written about my fascination with the very old and often very large trees that we saw on our weeklong spring walk in England’s Cotswolds. Many of the large trees stand apart, often in open areas or in rows between fields and pastures. This one, however, was close to a managed forest of smaller trees, which I presume are destined to become lumber when they grow larger.
