A vertical eye-level shot inside a dim, shaded woodland grove. In the foreground and midground, thick, textured brown tree trunks frame the view, including a massive lateral branch that bends dramatically down toward the forest floor in a sweeping U-shape before rising back upward. Since this female blue blowfly (Calliphora vicina; 🇩🇪 Blaue Schmeißfliege) was good enough to pose for me on the ivy for a while, I thought I'd share a bunch of pictures to show her off 🤷‍♂️🙂

A large blowfly seen from above feeding on a yellow-green ivy flower head. The fly has brick red compound eyes widely set in a grey and black head, marking it as a female. The three small ocelli can be seen in the gap. The thorax is a dusty blue grey with darker longitudinal partial stripes, many fine black hairs, and lots of long black bristles. The abdomen isn't well see from this angle, but is a metallic blue with dark grey patches and many black bristles near the end. The wings are clear, with dark veins, darkening to a light brown right at the roots.

The same fly seen side-on, hanging half upside down from the ivy flower. The beige lower parts of the face can be seen, along with the long, wide proboscis and mouthparts feeding from the flower. The mostly grey thorax has some small brown parts, while the shiny metallic blue abdomen is seen more clearly, with many short and long dark bristles. The underside of the abdomen appears light grey from this angle. The legs are grey-black with many black spines and bristles.

I was playing around with Photoshop one day, and I saw an "Invert" option in the menu. I wasn't sure what it did, so I tried it on this image. I thought the result was stunning and surreal. It reminded me of something one might find at Disney World.

The left image is the original. The right image is the result of using Photoshop's Invert command.

After catching a salmon in a river, bears walk to the forest to eat it. They eat the fatty parts of the fish such as the brain, skin and eggs. The rest of the fish feeds birds, insects, invertebrates, and trees.

$High contrast black and white photograph of 2 different ice textures. The picture is split in 2 parts: the left part is composed of broken ice blocks that in some parts fused back together. The blocks are unequal and some are much larger than others. The right part is composed of a single ice sheet, that shows some cloudy inner texture and a small amount of snow on top (the snow covers a very small fraction of the ice).
