Here it is – my new JWST image of the young protostellar outflow system in Cassiopeia called HH288, aka The Dragon Jet.

We discovered it in the 1990s & the NASA/ESA/CSA JWST reveals stunning new detail, including several new jets crossing the main dragon 🙂👍

An image of a young protostellar outflow called HH288 in space, as seen with JWST. Much of the background is dark black and blue, with many stars sprinkled across with different colours and brightnesses, many showing the classic eight-pointed shape that comes from the JWST optics. The Dragon Jet itself is a swath of red, orange, and yellow emission spread horizontally across the image, with at least two crossing flows. The main flow resembles a Chinese dragon, hence the name.

The young crescent moon occulted Mercury today...as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico.

First photo is a telephoto shot of the moon only a minute after it uncovered our innermost planet. This was taken in bright twilight as a wind and dust storm was easing up.

Second photo is a wider angle shot ten minutes later that includes Venus in the bottom third of the frame. The evening twilight sky colors are pallid because of the dust storm clouds billowing a mile below me on the floor of the Tularosa basin.

The twilight sky is a medium blue while the crescent moon is a bright gray. Mercury is the overexposed white dot near the left horn of the crescent moon. Some crater and terrain detail is visible on the moon. Twilight is still so bright that we can't yet see earthshine on the rest of the moon's disk.

The evening twilight sky as a dust storm is easing up. The colors are subdued and the nearby trees are blurred in the exposure as they whip back and forth in the strong wind. Venus is visible below the crescent moon, about 1/3 of the way up from the very bottom of the frame. Mercury is visible next to the crescent moon.

JWST NIRCam and MIRI image of Arp 142, also known as NGC 2936, NGC 2937, and UGC 5130, or the Penguin and the Egg.

The Penguin is a spiral galaxy whose shape has been distorted by the gravity of the elliptical Egg galaxy. The two are about 100,000 light-years apart and completed a close pass between 25 and 75 million years ago.

$Arp 142, two interacting galaxies, observed in near- and mid-infrared light. At left is NGC 2937, nicknamed the Egg. Its center is brighter and whiter. There are six diffraction spikes atop its gauzy blue layers. At right is NGC 2936, nicknamed the Penguin. Its beak-like region points toward and above the Egg. Where the eye would be is a small, opaque yellow spiral. The Penguin’s distorted arms and orange dust lanes from the bird’s beak, back, and tail. The tail is wide and layered, like a beta fish’s tail. A semi-transparent blue hue traces the Penguin and extends from the galaxy, creating an upside-down U over top of both galaxies. At top right is another galaxy seen from the side, pointing roughly at a 45-degree angle. It is largely light blue. Its length appears approximately as long as the Egg’s height. One foreground star with large, bright blue diffraction spikes appears over top of the galaxy and another near it. The entire black background is filled with tiny, extremely distant galaxies.$

This image was taken as part of the PHANGS program. They take high-resolution observations of galaxies at many different wavelengths of light to learn how the small-scale details of how stars form influence the large-scale structures of galaxies.

A face-on barred spiral galaxy anchored by its central region, which has a bright blue central dot surrounded by a lighter diagonal blue bar structure made of a haze of stars, which forms an angled oval toward the top. The central core and bar fill about a third of the image. Two distinct spiny spiral arms made of stars, gas, and dust also start at the center, appearing brown or greenish within the blue bar, and extending to the edges, rotating clockwise in bright oranges. The brightest areas of the arms are two large arcs that start at the central region. The one at left stretches up to the top in a long arc and another at right extends toward the bottom. Scattered across the packed scene are bright blue pinpoints of light, which are stars spread throughout the galaxy. In areas where there is less orange, it is darker. A triangular area at bottom right is largely the black background of space.

Earlier today, the discarded upper stage of a Falcon 9 rocket impacted on the Moon. As part of a coordinated observing campaign, our Very Large Telescope detected spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact.

What an amazing #SolarEclipse we witnessed this week! I photographed it from Peñafiel in the north of #Spain, home to a beautiful castle that provided the perfect foreground for the spectacular #eclipse. No picture can do it justice though: there's no substitute to actually seeing a total eclipse in person.

$A photograph of a dimly lit castle silhouetted against the dusk sky. It's a combination of multiple exposures, with the Sun appearing as a sequence of discs crossing the sky diagonally above the castle. A progressively smaller fraction of the Sun is visible as the eclipse progresses. Right above the castle the eclipse reaches the total phase, with the Sun completely blocked by the Moon, revealing a fiery corona around it. The sequence continues towards the horizon, with the Sun progressively reappearing.$

Because I just found it on an old USB stick I offer to you this 20 year old 320x240@15fps "video" of the Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) having a stretch.

This is the result of running a script in the telescope control software called "Cook's Tour". The original documentation describes the purpose of this script as being to "induce nausea in the prime focus observer". When that was written the AAT was still used for prime focus photography (yes, with big glass photographic plates) which required an astronomer to be inside that black cyclinder at the top of the telescope (actually another fairly similar one) during the night, in total darkness. Cook's Tour would be a fun ride for them.

More recently it was useful as a test of telescope movement control during the mid 2000's when the telescope control system was being replaced, and it has always been and continues to be a good way to show the telescope off to visitors or get cool videos.

This version of the video is not in real time, it's been sped up by a factor of a few.
