#introduction

Hello (again), after a brief posting hiatus and a search for somewhere to migrate to, I am back on Mastodon! I've been on the fediverse since 2023 but grew tired of the mastodon.social experience and felt like it was time to spread my wings.

A bit about me: I'm a 30-something fellow living in midwestern USA who works two jobs and takes care of two pets at home. I love #retrocomputing #retrogaming #writing #webdesign #electronicmusic #nature and many more things I can't think to list at the moment.

This affects the Fediverse.

This affects the Internet.

This is the equivalent of the "rubber hose method" of decryption.

All technical solutions (read: all technology) is subject to politics. To political power. To political interactions.

You cannot rely on purely technical approaches. You have to have social approaches, too. Like. Actual policy and procedure geared around social and political group dynamics.

Like. How will we react when the US Govt requires that @jerry to shut off infosec.exchange servers.

Or how we'll react when a specific Mastodon server is declared part of a terrorist infrastructure. Will federating with it mean any other Mastodon server is now part of the officially designated terrorist network (what then of people that federate with a server that federates with a server that is classified as part of a terrorist network. And so on)

You cannot carry the conceit that tech alone or a purely technical approach will save you.

currently there is a massive wave of spam registrations everywhere in the fediverse.

For mastodon, I have a solution that works for me:

Create new file /etc/nginx/conf.d/lsbt-registration-spam.conf:

Sharkey is generally no longer actively maintained. Much like IceShrimp, which shifted its focus from IceShrimp-js to IceShrimp.net, Sharkey is effectively in "maintenance mode only." This means it still receives critical security updates and required patches, but it generally no longer tracks upstream Misskey development.

I had to laugh when, back on January 13, 2026, they titled a release "2025.4.5 — We'll catch up, we promise." The release right before that had been 6 months earlier. In all the time since, they've only pushed out 2 security updates (2025.4.6 and 2025.4.7). They are now well over a year behind Misskey's development.

If anyone has the time and skills, I hope someone builds a script to migrate Sharkey sites back to Misskey. Since Sharkey is a fork of Misskey (as was FireFish), it should be possible and is a smart precaution.

Last weekend, roughly 200 media, IT, and policy people met at #FediDay Berlin to discuss the status quo & future of the #Fediverse & decentralized #SocialMedia.

Our @lxplm also attended – albeit on behalf of #SWR X Lab (welcome to the #ARD federation). Together with @Silbendrechsler (who runs the @3sat account), he discussed ongoing Fedi projects in the world of German public broadcasting.

We just received about 60 (?) fake account registrations - this time not even trying to pretend any identities, just kind of DDoS.

What it interesting, that this time, they did not use known #TOR exit nodes and the IPs are not known by existing blacklists. Instead, the attack seemed to came from pool of IP addresses owned by Japanese companies and from Japanese mailservers...

We need to figure identity of operators of this botnet. Let's setup some place to share the IP addresses used by botnet. If we want to keep #Fediverse and #Mastodon registration open, we must federate our blocklists too...

I would like to share my experience of building #FediHood.
While I still think that building timelines around you is an interesting enhancement for the #Fediverse, I think I was wrong about the way I did it.
Many people are interested, but not enough to create another account just for that feature. They want it with their current account.
I am happy to see #Pixelfed implementing it, and that is the way it should be done.

Quick heads-up for other Mastodon admins: this registration spam wave isn't over yet.

On lsbt.me, we first saw a flood of API registrations using Python/aiohttp. The telltale signs were usernames following the pattern bp plus 16 hex characters, and the sign-up reason was always "Automated protocol deliverability probe". A narrow block on that user agent stopped the first wave.

Today, however, five new registrations came in with the same usernames and the same sign-up reason. This time the bot simply identified itself as Chrome 126. That's exactly why a user agent is only useful as a short-term filter. It's a header the client can set to anything.

The requests go to POST /api/v1/accounts. This endpoint lets client apps create a new local account directly in the app. No app needs it for OAuth connections to existing accounts. #FediSuite doesn't use it either. It registers itself via /api/v1/apps, obtains consent via /oauth/authorize, and then works with a user token. Regular sign-up through the Mastodon website is also handled separately via POST /auth.

So I've completely disabled API account creation on lsbt.me. Web sign-up, OAuth, and existing clients keep working as before. Anyone who wants a new account just signs up once on the web as usual and can then use any client.

If you'd also rather not offer this optional native sign-up path, you can add the following to your Nginx server block, before the general location / block. The example assumes the @proxy location that many Mastodon Nginx configs already include:

This returns a 403 only for POST /api/v1/accounts. The read-only GET endpoint remains reachable. As always, run nginx -t afterwards and only reload once the test passes.

FediSuite 1.6.3

Your Fediverse Management Platform

FediSuite 1.6.3 is out. At its center is reach for public Fediverse posts. Likes, boosts, and replies show reactions, but not how many accounts likely saw a post. That's why FediSuite now calculates an estimated gross and net reach based on the FediWings model.

Gross reach counts possible visibility through the author and boosters. Net reach subtracts out double counting. If the same account boosts several parts of a thread, it doesn't get counted multiple times in the total. FediSuite treats threads as one connected post instead of artificially inflating each segment. These are the details that turn a nice-looking number into a useful one.

The calculation runs in the background for new and already imported posts. Older posts get their turn too, gradually. In the overview, the dashboard, and the top posts list, you can sort by net or gross reach. A badge links directly to the methodology page. It explains how the formula works, what it's based on, and where its limits are. Reach is an estimate, not an oracle. That's exactly why the explanation belongs right next to the number, not in some blog post nobody finds.

It's worth reconnecting your own Fediverse accounts in FediSuite, so that every post actually gets imported at full length. Then it takes a bit of patience: gross and net reach are only calculated after the historical import finishes, and then in small intervals. It can take an hour or two before all the reach numbers are available.

Along the way, 1.6.3 cleans up quite a bit: the time axes on the growth charts finally stick to the selected period, import progress shows its actual phase, and post rows can now be expanded. When fetching reach data, FediSuite now caps concurrent requests per instance at six. A full queue now drains much faster, without flooding small remote instances with requests.

There were also, of course, plenty of smaller changes and fixes under the hood:

• Proper UI scaling from 720p to 4K.
• Historical data import now shows a coloured progress bar.
• There's a new "Credits" page, linked in the footer.
• There's a new "Methodology" page, linked as a badge on every reach calculation.
• Follower charts fixed.
• And much more!
