Following LP-sized pancakes at the North Pole in Newport on Saturday, our southeast Twin Cities metro ham radio club will administer tests at the church and then host a hidden-transmitter fox hunt.
Our club secretary thinks it'd be fun to dress up in fox suits. They're very popular.
I think we should get extra points, Field Day-style, for arriving on a horse, blowing a bugle, attracting press attention.
The ringleader of our fox hunt claims his girth affords 60dB attenuation, an important factor in radio direction-finding.
Here's a good introduction, and thorough:
'To the uninitiated, Fox Hunting may appear to be easy. "Take a bearing to the Fox. Plot it on a map. Move to another location. Plot the second bearing. Find the Fox where the bearings cross." In reality, Fox hunting can be difficult. It is a skill that can be learned, and some people have more innate talent for it than others.'

Experimental musicians with an amateur radio license, I wonder if we can organize a jam or a concert on the radio waves?
Not sure on the technical details, but I'd like to do it all "above board." So we'd have to figure out how to transmit callsigns regularly, not use encryption, stay within allowed parts of the spectrum etc.
Just an idea, so thoughts, help, feedback welcome!

One of my favourite features of the #fediverse is seeing people *learning things*. There are so many folks here discovering dying arts and trades. People learning how the things we take for granted work, and endeavouring to implement them themselves!
People getting their #HAMradio licenses, #selfhosting, making clothing, blacksmithing, gardening, repairing their own things, backporting modern software to run on windows 3.11...
Y'all are my people. Never stop learning, and never stop sharing what you've learned.
This two hour documentary about Joann's going out of business left me wondering if #HamRadio is slowly concentrating down in similar ways. We saw it happen with MFJ on the supply side, and I worry that HRO is gradually becoming the only meaningful radio vendor in the States, at which point we're one sufficiently inspired private equity partner away from having to use Amazon for lots of stuff here.
It seems like it might be pretty easy to put a #hamradio #amateurradio #aprs or perhaps #lora tracker on my son’s bike to be able to track where he is on a race course but I am having a tough time figuring out what I would need to do that.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a good how-to?

That's like if all TCP/IP hardware was on a license from IBM.
Especially in the times of rising political tensions this looks like a bad idea.

Out on vacation with my family. Running #APRS as we drive, rarely making to the internet. Tried texting one driver from the hotel as they drove by. We’ll see if they see it.
This morning I was also listening to 146.520, and heard CQ #POTA. I was able to get back to them, and they were able to get the rest rather quickly to activate the peak.
