🇦🇹 Austria's Armed Forces have replaced MS Office with LibreOffice on 16,000+ workstations 📄
This shift began in 2020 to avoid mandatory cloud reliance ☁️
Their goal? Digital sovereignty—not cost saving 🔒
They even contributed 5+ person-years of code 🛠️
EU trend toward open-source grows 🇪🇺

RE: https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/116970521760021938
The level of pedantry in the replies is unreal. I know the Linux/FOSS crowd can be pedantic, but come on.
The Linux phone category is about phones running standard Linux systems, not Android/AOSP derivatives.
What makes a Linux phone:
- Package managers (apt, pacman, apk)
- Standard GNU/Linux tooling without Android wrappers
- FOSS interfaces like Phosh or Plasma Mobile
- No Google/Apple app ecosystem dependency
Actual options:
- @pine64 (PinePhone) - hardware made for Linux
- @volla - ships with Ubuntu Touch option
- Used Android phones repurposed with @postmarketOS or @mobian
The honest tradeoff: These won't match Android/iOS for battery, call reliability, or app availability. The modem is still proprietary blob territory regardless.
But the category matters because it is about what you can run and who controls it, not kernel semantics.
If someone needs a daily driver and doesn't trust Google/Apple: repurposed Pixel with postmarketOS, or accept Android with hardened privacy settings. If they want to tinker/support the ecosystem: PinePhone.
Both are valid depending on whether you need a phone that works or a phone you own.

Time for a new #introduction post after the move!
I'm Sar, a 50yr old nerdy guy from Northern Ireland. I love IT, and am into tech and all things computing.
My hobbies include playing #WorldOfWarcraft, reading about World Of #Warcraft and thinking about #WoW
Seriously though, my *other* hobbies also include:
#Astronomy
#Linux (alternating between #Bazzite & #ArchLinux)
#Gaming on #Steam, #PS5 & #Switch (mainly on PC though, see above!)
#SciFi such as #StarWars, #Startrek, #Babylon5, #Marvel & #DC etc
Also a screenshot junkie #VirtualPhotography
I'm also awaiting the results of my #Autism diagnosis as I write this, and am also fairly confident I have #ADHD as well, giving me the #AuDHD super-deluxe wombo-combo 😂
I decided to make the jump to this self-hosted instance at the end of 2025 after many happy years on masto.ai/@sar, and have no regrets.
Yet.

I managed to run OpenWrt on my Xbox 360.
(EDIT: For those who don't know, OpenWrt is an open-source operating system for network routers. In theory, it might also be possible to use an Xbox 360 as a Wi-Fi access point.)

Tractor is more than just a free software collective. It is a community of thoughtful, kind, and deeply committed people working to make technology serve human freedom, privacy, and dignity.
In a time when the internet is increasingly shaped by surveillance, control, and dependency, projects like Tractor remind us that another path is possible: a free internet, a humane internet, and a digital world where users remain in control of their own systems and communications.
If you are able, please consider supporting Tractor — whether through financial help, technical contributions, translations, documentation, or simply by sharing their work. Supporting Tractor is not just helping a team; it is an act of mutual solidarity with people who are making the world better for all of us.
Please stand with Tractor.
Support free software.
Help free the internet.

I did it! Despite some heavy challenges in RL or maybe just to stay a bit sane ;) I've finished my #aciddecember25 track
SOUR SGREEN LiCKARR
Tried something different this time by merging some #bassMusic vibes with #Acid – and yes, that turned out pretty nice, I'd say 😜 .
Sonic weapons of joice: #Renoise on #Linux with lots of #Uhe U-HE TyrellN6 instances (nowadays free!) for most of the "harmonic" sounds, Surge XT of course and most important JC-303, the by far best open source TB303 plug-in. Then a bunch of classic M1 Piano samples (not that they can be recognized as such after my heavy FX treatment), unconventional sliced and filtered drum loops from random "first to pop up in my SE" Internet sources, the iconic Atari ST speech synth, the Google Translate voice, own field recordings and lots of filtered feedback delay chains. Almost no reverb btw (only for rhythmic accents and in the beginning).
Here it is, right on the official Acid December web site (much thanks to the beings behind datapop.se, especially Martin and also Setto from #Basspistol and all the others behind it, for keeping dat 1989 club underground spirit alive!)

Native Linux support for Hytale will be launched as "experimental" https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2026/01/native-linux-support-for-hytale-will-be-launched-as-experimental/
I'm brave enough to say it: Linux is good now, and if you want to feel like you actually own your PC, make 2026 the year of Linux on (your) desktop
Sooooo my recent mishaps with server administration are making me speed up my plans of shifting towards community-owned and -maintained hosting.
Ever since my conversation with @boris almost one year ago, I took his quote “self-hosting is selfish” as a mantra. It’s time to act accordingly.
Together with @Holly and @youjungnoh, we are putting together a group of tech-savy people who want to, respectively:
- Learn more about system administration
- Get their hands dirty while doing so
- Maintain our own shared server
- Host their own things (be them websites, projects, or services) together with comrades instead of individual infrastructure.
There are many super cool collectives that are doing this already, and we intend to draw inspiration from their work and their documentation, but we really want to do this together!
Who wants to join? Please, do reach out! I already spun up a small-ish VPS that is now hosting all my static websites. If you’d like to get involved, reach out and I would be happy to give you SSH access 🌻
We would also be very grateful if more experienced sysAds want to help us out by hosting workshops or brief classes.
We intend to meet for the first time in South Holland (but maybe virtually too) sometime during the first two weeks of March.
Next steps:
- Find a name for this group/server/mission
- Plan a series of (free, open) intro lessons with guests
- Start hosting some things
- Migrate things I am already hosting with YunoHost in our community server
- Migrate to a physical device in a home of ours?
EDIT: I forgot to add this, but it goes without saying that ours would be a queer and transfeminist server
