La imagen es una fotografía en blanco y negro de las Hoces del Júcar, en la Serranía de Cuenca, tomada desde el Mirador de Mangana durante la tarde.

El encuadre está dominado por un profundo cañón fluvial excavado en roca calcárea, con paredes verticales que descienden abruptamente hacia el cauce oculto entre la vegetación. A la izquierda, una gran ladera montañosa cubierta de una densa masa de pinares cubre casi toda la pendiente hasta la cresta, que se recorta contra un cielo despejado y luminoso, típico de las tardes claras de esta zona de Cuenca.
Los acantilados calizos, con sus estratos horizontales visibles y erosionados, forman paredones escarpados que bajan hasta el fondo del valle, donde se acumula una vegetación frondosa de coníferas y arbustos.

En la parte derecha de la composición, entre la arboleda, asoma una construcción encalada con una torre de aspecto religioso, posiblemente vinculada a algún antiguo convento o ermita típica de la comarca conquense, que introduce un contraste de líneas verticales y tonos claros frente a la masa rocosa y vegetal del entorno.

La luz de tarde genera un cielo casi blanco, sin nubes marcadas, que aporta gran luminosidad de fondo y resalta por contraste las texturas rugosas de la roca y la espesura del bosque. El tratamiento en blanco y negro acentúa los volúmenes geológicos de la hoz, subrayando la profundidad del cañón y la escala monumental del paisaje natural que caracteriza a este tramo del río Júcar en su recorrido por la Serranía de Cuenca.

A square format detail of rice plant stems. The original was a color photo but this is a monochrome copy made to look like a grainy etching. Most of the image is of stems and leaves but at the top a thin strip of rice ears is visible, and at the base, scrubby fallen stems drift like snow at the edges of the frame. Rice paddy pic No. 106 is the original.

Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum)

But who is Joe Pye? It seems to be the anglophone name of a very interesting Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat, living at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Massachusetts and New York. Not clear he had anything to do with the plant, maybe only by association.

A scholarly article about botany, history and First Nations, with Latin names and a critical eye. Perfect 🤓
