It starts with a maze 😤

And is strangely designed to punish you for mistakes. I mean, this game is very slow, and the punishment is to make you backtrack more. There are no control settings, so you can't even set up a faster turning speed, and there doesn't seem to be some key combination to make a 180° turn like in survival horror games.

At some point the game clearly expects you to look up, but none of the buttons let you do that and, as I already indicated, there are no control settings.

This game seems to be intentionally frustrating as hell. Also it performs quite poorly.

2024年5月16日 评论 Didn't really grab me - While all the core mechanics are fine, I didn't really enjoy anything it brings to the table compared to other RPGs. The combat feels like too much micro-management to me. Then again, you can streamline it, but that feels almost like the game playing itself. I think the strongest appeal of such RPGs is usually the story and role-playing, which I found kinda lacking here. The game lets you create your own characters, which for me is by far the most fun I had with this game. The customization options are extremely diverse, ranging from race and class to moral alignment, even letting you write your characters' biographies. But what this means in practice is that the game isn't really written to accommodate the type of characters you create, their personality or their backstory. Meaning you're constantly faced with dialogue options that feel out of character for your character. All the dialogues are almost the same, regardless of who you play as. And you're also limited in what you can do story-wise. It's very linear. That kinda only leaves you with combat and upgrades. And for that aspect I'd rather play something like Diablo, where the gameplay mechanics are designed around combat and thus feel more intuitive.

2024年5月21日 评论 Dirt really feels like a game that was designed to satisfy everyone - It was probably the most accessible Colin McRae game to date without compromising on complexity. There's a huge amount of QoL improvements, and you can pretty much set the game up to your taste, from a hardcore simulation to an arcade racer. Plus better physics engine allowing for more destructible environments and more realistic collisions, and new disciplines with off-road vehicles. It should really be the best game in the series. The only issue for me is the way it looks, but it's a huge issue. There's a vignette filter and an over-abundance of bloom. A stylized look like this can work in some games, but not here. It just makes every track look like it's taking place in scorching heat, and kinda makes the entire experience unpleasant. I'd rather play more flawed games that look better. It's a shame though that we still can't get a mode with background music like the arcade mode in CMR 2.0. In this game there are 3 modes, and they all kinda play the same, which isn't really a bad thing, since the reason for it is that you can customize your experience to an equal amount in each of those modes, but it does make you question why they exist in the first place. In addition I had a strange issue with controls here. Not gonna blame the game for it, it's probably on my end, but sometimes the car would outright refuse to steer or have like 2-3 second delay to button presses. Not sure what's up with that. I hope I won't have such a problem with the sequels.

2024年5月23日 评论 This is really an arcade game masquerading as a simulator - My issue with this is that it kinda fails to be either one. In terms of handling it’s closer to the original Sega Rally rather than the Colin McRae games. And the physics feel like something out of 2004. The game lets you do some minimal tuning, but it’s almost pointless because it doesn’t even tell you anything about the tracks or the vehicles. The tarmac stages are the most fun to play because that’s where this game feels in its element, with high speeds and long drifts. The career mode is kinda interesting in that it lets you do some minimal visual customization to your car, unlocking new liveries and sponsor decals. But all the other modes are basically the same, the only difference being whether you want to play one race, an event, or a championship. Visually it can be pretty at times, but there’s this persistent awful blur in the distance, even after you disable depth of field and motion blur. I feel like they were just trying to hide the loading models and shadows, but it doesn’t help really, because the pop-in is still very visible. The stages that take place at sunset or sunrise are way too dark, and the cars aren’t using their lights for some reason. Even the original Colin McRae Rally did this better. At the end of the day this just feels like a game that’s several years behind. I wish it just dropped the pretense and let you race against opponents and with background music. Because it really has nothing hardcore simulator fans would appreciate. So it ends up being a shoe size that fits no one.

2024年6月12日 评论 This is one of those games that has actual good writing. - Like real literary quality writing. And a very strong atmosphere. People tend to shit on Clive Barker's Jericho and compare it to this game unfavorably. First of all, I don't think they're very comparable games. Yes, technically both are first-person shooters, but Jericho is a squad-based adrenaline-pumping gorefest, whereas Undying is a slow, atmospheric action-adventure. Second of all, mechanically Jericho is a much more competent shooter than Undying. Undying's biggest problem is really the fact that it's a shooter. It should've been a pure adventure game, because from this perspective it's pretty sick. The story is intriguing and instills that Weird/Gothic dread that is gradually rising as you move forward. The environments perfectly encapsulate that Lovecraftian sense of cold indifference of the world around you. And reading notes is probably the most fun I had with this game. However, even the note-reading is very jarring here as a mechanic, because it's very counter-intuitive with the rest of the gameplay. Undying essentially functions similar to Doom 3, in that it throws no more than 3-4 enemies at you at once and makes you go into your Journal (PDA in Doom 3) to explore the story. But the two things Doom 3 has that Undying doesn't are: Core shooter mechanics from the original Doom, although slightly dumbed-down to accommodate the horror atmosphere and demanding game engine. A sense of rhythm. Meaning, the sections where you fight enemies and the sections where you explore and read/play logs are clearly separated. The combat in Undying is just atrocious. The weapon roster is small, the feedback is not satisfying, most enemies spawn behind you and move silently or teleport, thus feeling very cheap. But the literal worst aspect of this game is the respawning. You will NEVER be left alone to take in the atmosphere and let the dread permeate you. Every few seconds a new goofy enemy spawns that is not scary in the slightest and ruins whatever horror the game is actually building. You also get spells, most of which have such specific use-case that they're worthless in 99% of combat encounters. At the end of the day, it's just painful to watch how this game keeps ruining itself, where incredible potential for an outstanding horror game is constantly undermined by its poor combat. A clear case of the gameplay being so bad that it deters me from putting time into investigating the story I am so interested in.

I know there are several versions of PowerSlave, and they're all very different. About PS1 version I can say that I didn't like it. Pretty confusing level design, despite a compass; plenty of tiny jumping or flying enemies, performance is mediocre and completely chugs when you pull up the map. I suspect the PC version is probably much better.

2024年6月18日 评论 This game is right up my alley, so I should really enjoy it, but I don't - The atmosphere and music are perfect, and the writing is decent. But the gameplay is just impossible. Maybe i just suck at adventure games, but I can't beat this game without a guide. And when I looked at the guide, some of the things there I could've never guessed in a million years. Btw this is another case of why achievements suck. During the second nightmare, which isn't meant to be obvious that it's a nightmare, it's supposed to be a gradual realization, if you enter the bathroom and open the medicine cabinet, you see a roach there and the achievement pops up that reveals both that you're in a nightmare and that you have a dual personality. I haven't gotten far enough in the game to know what that means, but it's a spoiler. And I would put a spoiler warning here, but the game basically spoils itself.

For a free and open-source game it has pretty good handling and physics, better than some of the commercial games I've played.

Unfortunately, its gameplay is all it has going for it really. There's no music, and the levels are barren hellscapes. That being said, they do have a surreal feel to them, and the devs do get creative with them on occasion, for example one level seems to be set on the Moon, and then another one expects you to jump over a huge chasm.

The track design is really good, but each race has a time limit. And if you fail 3 times, you have to restart the tournament from scratch. I did that twice and then gave up.

2024年7月4日 评论 I guess it's an alright stealth game - And the depiction of Innsmouth is still better than the horrendous Stuart Gordon movie (Dagon). But the atrocious writing ruins any attempts at horror and immersion here. Every character and their every line of dialogue is a cliche. Every cutscenes is a borefest. The writing neither imitates Lovecraft's style nor even the way people talked at the beginning of the 20th century. And having stuff like "Gilman Hotel" with its owner Charlie Gilman is like something out of a parody. Oh yeah, we fish-people like to have fish-related names so you could see there's something fishy about us. In addition, the game expects you to read logs, which are just as horrendously written. If this game was a book, nobody would've ever read it. I gave up at the point where Zadok was retelling me the premise of 'The Shadow over Innsmouth', at which point I questioned what I was even doing, listening to this bastardized version of a great book instead of just revisiting the actual book. I'm not gonna address the gameplay much, which seems fine for a stealth game, but I'm not usually into stealth games unless they do something unique and cool like Tenchu or MGS. But there is this dissonance between the story and the gameplay that manifests in different ways. For example, there's a million of locked doors. And I like to check every corner of every level for the fear of missing something (especially in adventure games), and the phrase "it won't budge" has become a major annoyance in the little time I played this. Interacting with objects just to hear the character say obvious things like "it's a stove" is also making the game look silly, thus reducing the horror. And what's up with that prologue where they send you into a house full of armed cultists without a gun? It just doesn't make sense and takes you out of the world. I felt the same way with all the rude Innsmouthians that straight up insult you without the game letting you retaliate. I'd much rather they just grunted and walked away, which I think would only add to the sense alienation and suspicion. I think, while CoC: DCotE (what an acronym!) is a better game, Darkness Within, which I reviewed recently, is an infinitely better Lovecraftian horror adventure. I'd rather play that game with a guide than spend any time on this without one. Plus I've heard it becomes very action-y in the second half and that the action here is not very good.

The Duel: Test Drive II is a cross-platform racing game developed by Distinctive Software and published by Accolade in 1989. It is the second entry in the Test Drive series of video games.

Like the original Test Drive, the focus of The Duel is driving exotic cars through dangerous highways, evading traffic, and trying to escape police pursuits. While the first game in the series had the player simply racing for time in a single scenario, Test Drive II improves upon its predecessor by introducing varied scenery, and giving the player the option of racing against the clock or competing against a computer-controlled opponent.

The player initially is given the opportunity to choose a car to drive and a level of difficulty, which in turn determines whether the car will use an automatic or manual transmission—the number of difficulty options varies between gaming platforms. Levels begin with the player’s car (and the computer opponent, if selected) idling on a roadway. Primarily these are two to four lane public highways with many turns; each level is different, and they include obstacles such as bridges, cliffs, and tunnels in addition to the other cars already on the road. Each level also has one or more police cars along the course.

The goal of each level is to reach the gas station at the end of the course in the least amount of time. Stopping at the gas station is not mandatory, and one could drive past it if inattentive. The consequence of not stopping results in running out of gas, and thus losing a car (life). The player begins the game with 5 lives, one of which is lost each time that the player crashes into something. If the player completes a level without crashing or running out of gas, then he or she is awarded a bonus life. In addition to losing a life, crashing adds thirty seconds to the player's time. Cars could crash into other traffic or off-road obstacles such as trees; they could crash by falling off the cliff on one of the mountain levels, or they could sustain too much damage by staying off the roadway for too long on the flatland levels. Players could also lose a life when using a manual transmission by redlining and consequently blowing the engine. Crashing into a police car instantly ends the game, regardless of the number of lives the player has left.

Police cars appear in every level, and if the player is driving faster than the speed limit when encountering one of them, the police car will follow in pursuit. If at any point while being pursued the police car is able to pass the player’s car, the player is forced to pull over and receives a ticket stating the offense and the speed of the vehicle. While this doesn’t cost the player a life, it does take away valuable time. Players can avoid being pursued by police by slowing down before encountering them, anticipating them through the aid of a radar detector, which comes standard in all vehicles in the game.

3 cars and 3 tracks, kinda pitiful selection. But the actual tracks have a lot of nuance, there's police, traffic, gas stations. And even this game from 1989 has better handling than Ridge Racer.

Back before we got PC, this was the closest thing to a driving simulator we had. My brother played a lot of it. Don't think it aged very well though, as literally every aspect of the game has been done better since.

The devs in the 90s must've hated kids, but the kids in the 90s must've been masochistic. I remember actually getting far in this game as like an 8-year-old. Now I'm 30 and I cry for my mommy after 10 minutes with this game. In a way, it made me feel younger than I've ever felt.

That being said, the graphics in this game are very detailed and much more atmospheric than the first one. And the gameplay is more complex.

But I've been spoiled by the Arkham games to the point that I can't with this game.

2026年2月10日 评论 More is less - Really makes you appreciate how focused and coherent Left 4 Dead was. I remember playing it for the first time, in single-player. If there's one word I'd describe the experience with, it's 'visceral'. It was such a brilliant mix of horror and survival-action where every component played a crucial part. It was a beautiful game distilled to its essentials. Back 4 Blood in comparison feels bloated, generic and unnecessary. Somewhere underneath all the bloat, there is a mechanically-sound game. Fundamentally, it's still good old Left 4 Dead. But there are so many distracting pointless mechanics and systems piled on top of it that you can barely recognize it. Half of this shit I don't even understand nor do I have any energy to attempt to. You draw some kinda decks and then you earn cards as well. You collect memorabilia for whatever reason. And then there's money and shop where you can buy shit, completely killing the unpredictability of having to fare with whatever weapons and items you find. Instead of 4 characters, you now have like 50 or something... none of which are memorable. The game completely lacks an aesthetic, looking like any random UE4 game with generic enemy designs and locations. For some reason you can buy or find a lot of augmentations for your gun, but there is no flashlight. It will sometimes turn on automatically in SOME dark areas, but in many others it won't, so you're stuck stumbling in the dark. You now have a sprint ability, which makes you regular speed slow. You can aim down sights, which of course makes your regular aiming less precise and feels out of place in a game like this. Your melee attack is now a knife-stab for some reason. It used to be a push that could push back several enemies at a time and give you a clearing in a crowd. Don't see any reason why that was changed. There's a lot of unnecessary items. Like I said earlier, everything in L4D had a very specific purpose and couldn't be replaced. I even sorta criticized L4D2 a bit for adding too much unnecessary stuff that doesn't add much to the formula. But compared to B4B, L4D2 was very subtle. All in all, I'd say B4B plays almost like a mix of L4D and Call of Duty. It very strongly gives off the impression of a "modern" multiplayer shooter where it's all about upgrades, achievements, collectibles and scores. No longer can you simply immerse yourself into the dark and perilous world of intense survival, where it's just you and your comrades against hordes of undead. In my time with B4B there wasn't one moment that left me impressed or imprinted itself onto my psyche. A truly forgettable, unremarkable, albeit quite competent, but utterly mediocre experience altogether.

The Joker celebrates his birthday wreaking havoc in Gotham and stealing diamonds, Two-Face tries to take over the city from above, and Mad Hatter is creating a robot army in his surreal lair.

The game can be played by two players simultaneously; one player with Batman, and the other with Robin. Both characters are identical in terms of playability, and both use batarangs, bolas, or shurikens in long-range attacks, while using melee attacks at short range. There are four levels consisting of several stages, mostly of a straight left-to-right traverse to the end where the boss awaits. In some levels the game switches to a side-scrolling shooter, in which the players must control the Batwings.

The game is regarded as being extremely difficult to complete, and also known for showcasing some of the most impressive special effects on the Mega Drive/Genesis. It also features a soundtrack by Jesper Kyd. This accounts for the relatively high quality of Kyd's compositions, as well as the fairly simple FM synthesized nature of the game's sound effects.

On some basic level, this is a competent shoot-em-up/beat-em-up with amazing graphics for Sega Genesis standards. But it's just ridiculously relentless. It's an infinite stream of enemies coming from all directions all the time. My right thumb literally got tired a couple minutes into it. I can't play this.

Part 3 in the Dutch A2 Racer series takes the player to London, Berlin and Vienna. The gameplay remains the same with illegal street races on well known highways and cities.

During the races players have to collect power-ups, like money, fuel and time extensions. He has to avoid getting caught by the cops and reach the finish line before his opponents do.

Very basic racer with decent handling and graphics, but awful physics and collision model. The speeds are rather slow, and it's rather easy. You can even drive on grass and it doesn't feel different at all, nor do you lose any speed. It kinda just feels boring, almost like you're not racing but just driving through the streets that manifest into reality in front of your eyes (the pop-in). You can earn money and upgrade/repair the car in between races, which is cool. The worst thing here is that the tracks will usually branch out into a lot of roads that seem driveable, but actually have invisible walls before them. Sometimes they will even be in the middle of the track.

Night Trap is an interactive movie video game developed by Digital Pictures and originally released for the Sega CD in 1992. The game is presented primarily through the use of full motion video (FMV). In Night Trap, the player takes the role of a special agent tasked to watch over teenage girls visiting a house which, unbeknownst to them, is full of danger. The player watches live surveillance footage of the house and triggers traps to capture anyone seen endangering the girls. The primary antagonists are Augers, vampiric beings who want to capture the girls for their blood. The player can freely switch their view between different cameras to keep watch over the girls and eavesdrop on conversations to follow the story and listen for clues.

There is a huge potential here for something artistic, but the game doesn't really want to tap into it.

You get to pretty much spy on a family, and choose between watching them and watching/neutralizing the invaders. What sucks is that the game basically forces you to focus on the invaders. I'd love to just watch the live-action footage recorded for this game without the pressure of having to flip through cameras and tediously wait for the invaders to get to the position where you can activate the trap. The actual gameplay here is super basic and gets old in minutes. Also, past a certain point I got confused and didn't know what I was supposed to do. The traps stopped working, and there's this color selection thing that I don't know what it's for, and the game doesn't bother to explain anything.

2024年10月23日 评论 An almost one-to-one Castlevania clone - ...which isn't necessarily a bad thing, aside from the fact it feels uninspired and kinda pointless when there's already like 30 Castlevania games. But the execution here is rather poor pretty much across the board: animations, controls, physics, level design. You don't have a mini-map, and pulling up the fullscreen one or the start menu takes like 3 seconds and the screen flickers with a white rectangle, making it feel like the game is about to crash. The graphics and music are rather decent for an indie game, but again, not really creating a good competition to all the actual Castlevania titles. I get that this is an indie title, so I'm cutting it some slack, and, for what it's worth, it's an overall okay experience, but I really see no point in playing it, unless this is the only game you have. I would probably enjoy something like this in pre-internet days, but not now.
