2025年4月17日 评论 Something like a mix of HoMM and Civ - I can't quite put my finger on why this game failed to captivate me, but it did. Sure, the interface is not the most intuitive, but it seems fine overall. I think I've just played enough 4X's that this game does simply doesn't impress me. I didn't really notice it doing anything special or interesting that I haven't seen in other games. I found both Warlock: Master of Arcane (including its sequel) and Fallen Enchantress more interesting. The former because it leans more into the 4X side of things, and the latter because it had some unique features.

2025年4月23日 评论 A case of nostalgia goggles. - Total Overdose is a really cool game in concept. Max Payne meets GTA with Robert Rodriguez' Desperado aesthetics. That's how I remembered this game, and in most aspects it really does deliver that experience. The open-world is rather limited, but that's understandable in a game that focuses more on being a shooter, and it's still filled with side activities and collectibles. The story is ridiculous by design, echoing grindhouse B-movies. What I misremembered though is what the shooting was like. It's in fact the furthest thing from Max Payne, as it's completely ruined by its consolified orientation. An auto-aim determines where your bullets are gonna land, unless you execute a special move (holding down the right click for about two seconds and left-clicking at a specific time), which allows you to perform a headshot. In other words, your actual aiming skills don't matter. Headshots are a hassle to execute and, the more intense the situation is, the less opportunity you have to do the stupid 2-second hold thing. Normally in shooters it's the other way around: landing headshots is hard, but makes enemies die quicker, which means you are rewarded for your skill, and in more intense battles you are encouraged to land more headshots. Not here. Enemies might as well be amorphous blobs, and you just point your gun in their general direction and hold down the left mouse button. This is a major problem because this game is a shooter first, and shooting is what you're gonna be doing most of the game. If that wasn't enough, every super power is basically another way for you to take out enemies without the need for accuracy. And it's not like this is one of those games where different enemies are more vulnerable to different guns. In fact, the actual physics behind the gunplay are almost non-existent. Every gun feels the same. Shots carry very little weight, even when you're using a sawed-off shotgun or a revolver. Similar criticism can be applied to the driving physics, but that is not very important in this game. What's more important is that Sleeping Dogs came out 7 years later and did the whole John Woo-esque slow-mo combat in an open-world much better, effectively rendering Total Overdose obsolete. I think it only probably plays well on a console where you wouldn't be paying much attention to aiming anyway if it was there. Or might even hate it, as I've seen people do with accuracy-driven shooters. Also, this is my personal nitpick, but why the hell is there so much yellow here? It's like they have yellow textures, yellow lighting and then on top of that yellow in-game light sources, like street lamps and such, which are on even during daytime. Why is Mexico always yellow/orange? I've seen pictures of it, it seems quite normal in real life.

2025年4月21日 评论 I can't with this game. - Every time I return to it, I think "this time I will beat it" and I always end up giving up. The mechanical foundation is obviously great and even expanded with the dual-wielding combat and new tricks, but I find everything else about the game to be worse. The aesthetics obviously. It's like something Zack Snyder would direct. And, as in the case with many of Zack Snyder's works, my question is: why? Prince of Persia was clearly a fairytale inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, why shove it into this brutalized and sexualized shell? Prince of Persia is just not the vehicle for these ideas. Perhaps they tried to copy God of War or something. But furthermore I just cannot stand the brownness of it. It's as brown as Deus Ex: Human Revolution is orange. Pick any random screenshot from it and there's a 90%+ chance it'll be predominantly brown. After a while I just feel like I'm traversing tunnels of mud (to put it nicely, if you know what I mean), and this creates a strong aversion to even coming back to the game. But the single worst thing about it is the backtracking. It's like: "remember how much you liked the brown tunnels earlier? Well, we thought so, so we brought them back again! And again!" And repeat ad nauseam. I must've had much more patience when I was younger because I remember getting quite far in the game, even though I wasn't a huge fan of it then either (I was kinda riding on the hype of it being a new Prince of Persia game), but at this age I get sick of this kind of shit real quick. Also, I used to have this game on 3 CDs with the awful StarForce DRM, but ended up losing it in a wager to my friend. I was kinda bummed that day, but in retrospect ... eh...

2025年3月26日 评论 They must've deliberately named the engine after the emotion it elicits. - I'm so glad that I played Max Payne 3 on PC, because these RAGE games seem to run like utter dogshit on consoles. But, you know, even ignoring the horrible aliasing, low draw distance with LODs and shadows visibly popping in, subpar performance, and ridiculously long loading screens, the game just straight up looks ugly. If you move far enough away from the TV, some of the scenery looks really nice (because you can't see that most of it is LODs), although the colors are still rather dull, but the interiors are just horrendous. Blurry textures, primitive lighting, it looks worse than Aliens: Colonial Marines upon release. I can't believe people let this slide. Visuals aside, I was sincerely hoping this game wouldn't be just GTA in the Wild West, but that's exactly what it is. Sure, the combat is not as ass as it was in the GTA 3 trilogy, and there's some nice physics, but the mission design and the way the game is structured is exactly as bad as in GTA 3. In addition there seems to be more of an emphasis on story, which just seems painfully boring. This game must've been written by the same people that wrote the GTA games because they seem to think that quirky and/or charismatic characters pass for good storytelling, even if they don't say anything important or meaningful. After the poorly masqueraded tutorial missions, I drove around from town to town just to see how the game is structured. It's exactly the same formula as in GTA 3: go to characters, do frustrating and boring missions to unlock more of the map, go to new characters, repeat. Plus there seems to be this weird obsession with realism. Just like in GTA 4, you can do a lot of activities that are neither fun nor meaningful and seem to only be present there for flavor. And, just like in GTA 4, everything is accompanied by long unskippable animations, because it would probably be too "gamey" to just use text and sounds like the old games. The one thing I liked are the events you randomly run into in the wild, but that's not enough to convince me to invest 17+ hours into this. After an hour and a half, I'm tired. Because really it's more than that. It's all those countless hours I've spent playing the old GTA games. At least those had vibrant beautiful worlds and embraced the fun essence of being a video game. RDR is the same old product wrapped in a new, less appealing packaging.

2025年3月28日 评论 This game had no business being open-world. - By far the most fun I've had with it were those guarded zones you infiltrate, where you can use environmental traps and obstacles, and find different paths through somewhat intricate level-design. The world itself is boring. There's no reason to do any of the side-quests or mini-games, and there's little to no customization. The profiler thing is fun for like 5 minutes before you realize that it's just a bunch of text that doesn't matter. It certainly doesn't make the NPCs feel like real people. From the technical standpoint, for a multi-generational release, this game looks and runs really well on PS3, and the physics are really impressive as well. That being said, it looks really bland and soulless. The licensed soundtrack is also quite boring in the sense that it has plenty of great songs, but they're all famous songs that everyone has heard. The game started off really cool and got me invested, but after a couple of hours I felt exhausted. The pacing of the story is about as bad as in GTA games. I think it's a decent title really, it's just that, aside from a couple of aspects, it feels so soulless and generic. I wish they just delivered a linear action game with stealth elements, where it would've been just infiltration levels. This had a great potential.

2025年3月30日 评论 Here comes a giant enemy crap - Why is one of the characters voiced by an English-speaking person with a stereotypically bad Japanese accent? This might be the slowest slasher I've ever played. I think they implemented that smooth framerate thing, which eliminates stutter, which is good, but the framerate must be so slow that it feels like you're underwater most of the time. You have no control of the camera, but the camera is not static, it moves around and crawls into every nook and cranny. And then you have to fight the enemies you cannot see. Sure, you can look at the mini-map, but the mini-map won't tell you when they're attacking or blocking, so you can't time your attacks right. Also there doesn't seem to be a compass or a quest description that would tell you where you gotta go. What if I stop playing and pick it up after a week, how am I supposed to remember where the hell I'm supposed to go?

I feel like I lost several brain cells before I ever got to the gameplay, which takes so long to get to that I almost gave up.

You sit through like 10 logos, then a cutscene, then some fucking visual novel bullshit where the story is just softcore porn, and not the good kind. Then you spawn at the headquarters and gotta go through the missions door, after which there's more visual novel bullshit.

Finally you're in the game and it's a fucking tiny arena where you get to fight a crowd of the same enemy with like two or three combo attacks. It's braindead. It's worse than if you take Dynasty Warriors and remove anything involving strategy from it. Just a dumb button-masher for horny weebs, that's all it is.

2025年7月7日 评论 A most unremarkable and pointless rally game - I suppose the WRC series are kinda like the FIFA of the Rally world in that they release the same game over and over again with minor alterations. It's not a terrible game, in fact it's pretty alright, but by 2013 standards it's embarrassing. There are games from the late 90s that had more depth and better physics than this. This game has all the flaws of the previous WRC games and does nothing to improve them. In addition, they really failed to get the vibe right. I criticized 1 and 3 for having brostep soundtrack, but here it's this epic orchestral music and live-action videos with slow-motions and fade transitions. It's like, chill, we're about to drive a car, not send a man to the Moon. The career mode makes you choose your country, name, and face and then the same for your co-driver, like you give a shit. And they have like 12 faces, all of which look vaguely South-European or Middle-Eastern. What If I'm playing as a Chinese dude? Then they ask you to choose your plate number, which is like the most unnecessary thing imaginable. At the end of the day, WRC 4, like its predecessors, feels like soulless commercial slop. I don't even wanna check WRC 5 at this point. Also, the PS Vita version suffers from blown out colors and severe aliasing. I'd avoid it at all cost.

2025年7月14日 评论 The game leaves a strong first impression with its character customization and unique melee combat system - You can grab your opponent and slam them against various surfaces, throw them through windows or off the roof, etc. It reminds me of the Punisher with its environmental torture sequences and tons of animated finishers. The ranged combat is less interesting. There's a lock-on auto-aim, which is a mess because you can accidentally switch targets when just trying to move the reticle towards the head. Oh yeah, you can shoot different body parts and the enemy will react accordingly, i.e. fall down if you hit their knees or drop their weapon if you hit their hands. Which is kinda wasted here because there's no incentive to do that and you're unlikely to do that accidentally with this lock-on system. You can also aim freely, but then the camera moves to over the shoulder, and it's not dynamic, so it may be over the wrong shoulder, becoming a nuisance more than anything. There's also a really rudimentary cover system that you're better off not using. The driving is fine, but a lot of the driving missions are way too hard even from the start of the game. Not to mention the chaos you cause on the streets is really immersion-breaking. This game is supposed to be more grounded and realistic than GTA. Easily the coolest feature in this game is taking over businesses. You walk into a shop, threaten the owner, beat him up if that's not enough, then force him to pay you income every week. Of course you also gotta murder all the members of another family, who own and guard the place, to even get inside, but the money's worth it. Unfortunately, it seems like that's all you're gonna be doing in the game besides the story missions. And it gets old very fast. I did several of these in a row from the start just to clean up the neighborhood and establish a steady flow of income. And after about an hour of doing that, I was so over it. It just takes way too long, and there's basically only a few templates of these businesses that repeat over and over again. So after a while it becomes a chore. The world is empty. Essentially a big hub. There's some property you can buy, and some gun dealers, but that's pretty much it. I feel like they should've introduced more strategic and management elements, and cut back on all the action. But there seems to be no real way to manage your owned businesses or conduct diplomacy. All you do is run around beating people up and shooting them. Far as I can remember, there was some kinda strategic mode on PSP to compensate for the lack of the open world. Might actually be a better approach.

2025年7月17日 评论 Only enjoyable if you love the music - I played it for the Tour mode, where you create your own band and build a career. I feel like the premise of the mode runs contrary to the way it plays out. There's a lot of customization in what your characters will look like and move like. But then, when you start touring, you're forced to play songs that do not match the image of your band at all, not to mention you might personally dislike them. For example, I created a hardcore punk band called Lead Poisoning. Chose the logo, names, and clothing that would reflect the intensity of the genre. But then I'm forced to play songs by Bon Jovi or Boston, or other slow and melodic shit I don't like. I'd rather play System of a Down, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, or even Nu Metal bands like Korn. Hell, I'd even take Limp Bizkit. Idk if any of these bands are in the game, but I gotta play shit like Smashing Pumpkins just to unlock new stuff. That is just not worth it.

2025年7月17日 评论 More options than in Rock Band: Unplugged, but clearly much lower production values, janky interface and tutorials that don't explain enough - In this game you're allowed to actually create your own songs, but the song builder is very limited. I spent like an hour crafting a song, and in the end it was complete garbage. Plus not like that has any actual impact on the in-game quality of the song and how it will be received. They should've either used existing songs or made them symbolic and cut the rhythm-game sections entirely. I'd rather see something like in Game Dev Tycoon where you select the genre and other aspects of the song and then your character skills determine how it turns out. You are allowed to not craft songs manually, which also obviously removes the rhythm-game, but then songs become just abstract names that don't represent anything. Also, I recorded a bunch of songs and wanted to put out like an EP, but I couldn't figure out a way to do it. Perhaps you're not allowed to until you get a record deal or something, idk, but that's stupid.

2025年8月18日 评论 Another one of those "let's shove every novelty PS Vita gimmick into this whether that makes sense or not" games - Mechanically, it's too simple, sometimes naive . Combat consists of one button, no lock-on or auto-aim. The ability to fly is pretty cool, but in practice doesn't serve any gameplay purpose other than faster movement. Since it's an open-world game, there's an urge to explore, but you're not allowed to go to any interesting places. Really the main and only attraction of this game is the presentation. I'm not particularly into the whole Amelie meets Ghibli aesthetic, but I loved the music. And I think the animations are really smooth and make actions more enjoyable to perform. This, sadly, doesn't save the game from being boring. An absolutely atrocious tutorial is followed by mind-numbingly basic missions. The story is anime-quality, thus unable to hold my attention either. The main protagonist keeps talking to her cat like an insane person.

2025年7月26日 评论 The only thing I remembered about this game from my childhood was that it was open-world. And it kinda is. - It's a coincidence that the last game I played was Gravity Rush, cause the two are very similar. Obviously Shark Tale is designed for kids, specifically as a movie companion. There's not much depth to the game, and it would be stupid to expect any. But just like in Gravity Rush your main mechanics are 3D movement and a rush attack. Just like in Gravity Rush the open-world seems big, but you're not really allowed to explore anything interesting. Just like in Gravity Rush you can approach NPCs and do quests for them. The cool thing here is that you get your own apartment that you can furnish with the money you collect. Most missions seem to be based around movement. There are stealth missions, races, timed collectathons, and chases. The first three are self-explanatory, the last one is kinda like that troll chase in Harry Potter 1 or those moments in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 where the camera switches to the front. Those are also pretty basic mechanically, you just gotta move to right parts of the screen at the right time. Then there's also a rhythm mini-game (God, out of all the ideas in GTA San Andreas they took this). It's horrible. The rhythm doesn't even really match the song. I wanted to play long enough to see how the game handles the shark fights, as they are the central action scenes of the movie, but I got too bored to continue. 1 hour into the game you're still not fighting sharks. Well, at least you get to throw urchins at Martin Scorsese.

2025年7月29日 评论 My second time trying this - The first time I didn't make 15 minutes into it because of how player-hostile the control scheme is. This time I tried to force myself to overcome it. When judging old games it's important to keep in mind their impact upon release, but the truth is, I don't think I would've enjoyed this game even then. I remember myself as a child. I probably had even less tolerance for games I couldn't figure out then than I do now. But the problem with System Shock is not really that it's old or hard to figure out. The problem is that at the end of the day it's just not fun because of the way its mechanics are executed. It is undoubtedly an ambitious game for its time. The amount of freedom it provides the player is incredible. My question is: what's the point of all this freedom if doing almost anything in this game is a chore? Yes, I have figured out the controls this time, but it doesn't change the fact that, for example, to pick up an item you need to first click on the object containing it, the item then appears in a little window, then you need to drag and drop it to another little window. This is a thing you'll be doing constantly. Or the fact that the combat is just plain bad. For something that came out a year after Doom, it's just not designed in any engaging way, or you could say not designed at all. Just point your reticle at the enemy and left-click them to death. And constantly switching between different interface elements is a major hassle. For example, if you want to have a map on the screen, you have to have a rearview camera at the same time, which appears in the same window as the inventory and logs, meaning you can't have those things on the screen at the same time. If you're gonna turn the interface into a "graphing calculator" (as someone called it here), you might as well allow us to pick what we want to have on the screen and what we don't. Anyway, 30 minutes into it I just caught myself thinking: I'm not getting any sense of enjoyment or satisfaction from this. A bit of frustration, but mostly boredom. Still, it's obviously a very influential game with incredible graphics for its time and innovative gameplay, so I think it deserves its 2 stars. But would I recommend it to anyone in 2025? Definitely no. It's easy to accuse me of ageism here, but I actually enjoyed Ultima Underworld quite a bit when I tried that, and it's 2 years older and a spiritual predecessor to this.

2025年8月2日 评论 Very ambitious idea, very poor execution - I like that you're given a big city to run around in and use its level geometry any way you want. But in practice it almost feels like a complete abandonment of level design. You're just thrown into this arena and have a horde of the same enemies coming at you from random directions. The AI is bad, there's no nuance to any of your weapons, almost no physics, just point your gun and shoot. You can't even reload or crouch. And then the levels aren't even fully traversable. There are invisible walls that you can't go through, but the enemies can. It feels like very little effort went into designing this. This reminds me of modern asset swaps.

2025年8月11日 评论 If it wasn't for its unique position and technological advancement, I would've rated it much lower - If you ignore the fact that it's a technical marvel and the second FPS in history that you could play on a handheld gaming device with no compromises, it's really not a good game by any metric. Every encounter feels the same. There's no skill involved, you can even stop aiming down sights, just spray bullets in the general direction of the enemy and score headshots. You fight bad AI in locked arenas with bad auto-aim, melee attacks that don't work half the time and are a hassle to pull off because you gotta do a touch screen QTE during which you can take damage, controls that make no sense (sprint and crouch are the same button), ridiculously long loading screens with cheap and boring briefing-style cutscenes that you can't skip until the level finished loading, useless close-range weapons, the ammo pick-up being manual with a button press (why?), and just a fucking boring generic story in a boring generic setting with a boring generic aesthetic. I've played budget titles that had more creativity in them. This is just commercial slop.
