Traditional street music in Athens. Tricky dappled light conditions... not sure it works as well viewed on a phone.. but then, photos were never meant for this medium!

A dog (right) stands with her head up, smiling, a flaring sun bright above her head. A landscape of trees and late summer grasses backlit gold by the evening sunbeams.

#PhotoOfTheDay: A Tide-Fueled Trove of Biodiversity in Guinea-Bissau

The expansive mudflats, sandy beaches, and mangrove forests of the Bijagós archipelago support an array of migratory shorebirds and large numbers of sea turtles.

Selling Veg

This is a black and white street photo in landscape format of an Indian man crouching down beside his market stall which is stacked with neatly arranged vegetables. Saket, New Delhi. (2013).

To the right and below centre is our grocer. He is crouched down on the ground with his ams crossed against the winter's cold. The camera is located a few metres away, at the same level as the grocer and angled at the corner of his stall. He is wearing a knitted bobble hat, pulled down over his ears, a thick white long sleeved fleece, zipped up to his neck, light toned track suit bottoms and dark trainers. He is looking straight ahead and has a neatly trimmed short dark beard. Extending from the left edge of the photo, past our man to the right edge is his market stall. The front of the stall is between left edge and centre of the photo. The multitude of assorted vegetables are organised by variety and stacked about half a metre high, neatly, on a series of benches so they appear to be tiered, getting higher the further they are from the front. The benches have course sacking draped over the sides.

'SLAINS CASTLE'

A photograph of Slains Castle standing dramatically on the cliffs above the North Sea in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Viewed from the air, the castle’s ruined stone walls and unusual layout are clearly visible, perched right on the edge of the rugged cliffs. Beyond it, the wide open landscape of the Buchan coast stretches into the distance, while turquoise sea surrounds the rocky shoreline below.

“Blue Door” — Blue door, brick wall, cobblestone street, Shrewsbury, England.

I made this photograph the English town of Shrewsbury. (More about that place below.) If a photograph is “about” something, this one is about more than one thing. To be sure, it is a record of a specific spot in a particular town, a doorway to a building with a sign for “Alfred Mansell & Co. Auctioneers.”It is perhaps a record of some history, too, given the old brick walls, the weathered doorway, and the cobblestones at the bottom of the frame. But most of all, I think it is about color, the “temperature” contrast between the warm tones of partially-sunlit bricks and the very cool blues of the doorway in shadow.

'Typisch für meinen Wohnort / meine Heimat' #FotoVorschlag ' Typical of where I live / my home'
The topic today could be interpreted in various ways. I finally decided to do the most obvious thing and took a shot of Mannheims most famous landmark. Not the best weather and not a good time of the day for nice photos, but at least (I think) I found an angle that is slightly different from the typical postcard picture.

#PhotoOfTheDay is an ancient camera phone photo of a sign for a small rural California town I had wanted to visit for years... Definitely one of those "blink and you'll miss it" places!
